Sara Griot Style · Sara Griot Style

I spent two days with Lisa last week. She is a longtime client - someone I’ve had the privilege of working with more than once - and every time we get together, I’m reminded of why I do this work, and how much I love working with her.

Lisa’s style is elegant, classic and understated with a dash of sporty as she lives in a beach city in California.

Her closet is fabulous. I feel like a kid in a candy store when I walk into it. Beautiful pieces from great brands, a perfect combination of neutrals, colors, and prints, unique one of a kind accessories - every category covered. From the outside, it looks like a dream wardrobe.

But like so many women, Lisa stands in front of it most days and feels completely stuck and will often revert to the tried and true outfit vs. taking a chance on a new look.

Not because she didn’t have enough. But like so many clients, the dilemma was how to style it and wear it. Sound familiar?

Many women look at what everyone else is wearing and try to translate that to themselves instead of really getting to know the cuts, styles and colors that work for them and that make them feel fabulous. That’s how you build confidence and curate a wardrobe that works for you.

Being inspired by what we see other people wearing is natural and exciting, but a literal translation of someone else’s look doesn’t usually work. Reinterpreting what you saw and making it work for your body is your best bet. I’ve said this above and I will continue to say it, wearing what truly makes you feel good is the winning ticket. You can put two different women in a black blazer and one will feel confident and powerful, and another will feel uncomfortable and not themselves. One piece of clothing can make two people feel two very different things.

Over two full days together, we edited, tried on, created an alterations list, and then finally did what I love most and what I wanted to help Lisa build confidence around. Outfit building.

We started with some new pieces (above) that she had questions about and that I wanted to see on her, check fit and to create outfits with. Then we pulled out everything else.

The questions are - does it fit? Does this flatter you? Does this feel like you? And what are the ways to wear it. I stand by my belief that each piece you own should be able to be worn 3 different ways. There are some exceptions of course, but in general your closet should be cohesive and easy to mix and match.

Lisa has some stunning, unusual blouses. Blouses can be tricky because there are so many variables-length, neckline, fitted or loose, tuck it in or leave it out? These elements alone can make what seems to be an effortless blouse + pant + ballet flat outfit into a frustrating and stressful morning. A general “rule” for blouses and tops is, volume on top - slim on the bottom, volume on the bottom - slimmer on top. There is also the French tuck, the half tuck, the side tuck, and of course the full tuck. All of the tucks are useful for creating a little shape, which is always good. Then she tried on her sweaters, and her beautiful leather jackets as well so I could see where they hit on her body, which is important when creating outfits for her. Next up, her jeans(which have been edited down to styles that are comfortable and flattering ) and her selection of trousers. She has a stunning, one-of-a-kind jacket she’d been saving for “the right occasion”, and we found the perfect piece to wear it with + platinum shoes + clutch. It’s ready to go to a fun event. Everything was there in her closet.

What Lisa needed wasn’t anything new, it was a new way of seeing what she already had.

By the end of day two, we had built a full selection of outfits from what she already owned. And I will be creating more for her digital closet. Looks for every part of her life. Combinations she may have hesitated to put together on her own. A closet that will continue to evolve, but finally makes sense for her body, her lifestyle, and who she is right now.

It’s ALL ABOUT HOW THE CLOTHES ON YOUR BODY MAKE YOU FEEL That’s it. End of story. As a stylist, I feel so deeply committed about helping women to trust their inner voice, because once you do, your style confidence will skyrocket!

If you’re struggling to find your signature pieces, it’s probably because you need to clear out what’s draining your energy first. When your wardrobe is cluttered with items that no longer align with who you are, it’s hard to see what truly supports your evolving style.

Book a call here and we’ll discuss your unique situation, who you are becoming and how I can help you elevate your look so it’s aligned with your next stage.
