Twenty-six years ago I had the yearning to re-read He, She, and It, Marge Piercy’s prescient-in-so-many-ways, post-apocalyptic novel. But post-polio syndrome was smacking at my arm muscles, and holding open a 450 page book on my chest was not viable anymore. When I whined to a friend, she said I should get over my revulsion for all things Amazon and get myself a Kindle. She said I didn’t need to then buy books from the “evil empire.” That I could borrow them from my local library through Overdrive (which is now Libby). Which I did. Which I still do.
And who knew that a quarter of a century later, Libby, through the Alachua County Public Library, would carry all four of my books. For free. And the cover is ragged, but I’m still using that Kindle I bought that one time all those years ago.
AND HURRAH TO ALL OUR PUBLIC LIBRARIES!
