With less than a month left before the anticipated release of the Bitchy! collection, I’m continuing to review various Naughty Bits issues in my collection. You can read my last review of #22 here.
Despite signature character Bitchy Bitch aka Midge McCraken being on the cover (granted by the sidelines), she doesn’t appear at all in the issue besides in 2 comic strips at the end in favor of her angry lesbian counterpart Bitchy Butch, who made her Naughty Bits debut on #21. Our main story, “A Butch is Born,” opens at a lesbian bar viewing party for the monumental coming out episode of Ellen Eileen Purvis’ sitcom. Most of the viewers are ecstatic about the pop cultural waves this TV event will make.
Of course, as with anything, there are a few cynics in the crowd, including no other than Bitchy Butch herself. You could even say she’s livid about it. However, where Midge’s rage is the byproduct of general misanthropy, Butchy’s primarily comes from a place of generational envy. After her friends drop her home, she rants to herself “Those stupid kids have it so easy going to high schools with gay student clubs! Picking up this [Gal magazine] slick rag at the same shop where they buy their bubblegum an’ Pepsi’s!!”
