Our studies in loneliness continue this fall, beginning in September with a four week course on Hannah Arendt: Loneliness, Isolation, and The Specter of Totalitarianism. Is loneliness really the underlying condition of all totalitarian movements?

What is loneliness? What is isolation? What is solitude? Continuing our deep dive into the history of loneliness through literature, poetry, philosophy, art, and psychology, this course will explore Arendt’s claim that loneliness is the underlying condition of all totalitarian movements. Drawing from published works, unpublished archival material, correspondence, and secondary criticism, we’ll ask if she got it right. What did she mean by loneliness? And what is loneliness trying to tell us about our political climate today. Is there a relationship between loneliness and the rise of the new far right?

Readings will include, “Ideology and Terror,” selections from The Human Condition and Thinking, correspondence with David Riesman, author of The Lonely Crowd, Mary McCarthy, Karl Jaspers, and Heinrich Blücher, among others.
