Fall Into Mending

I blinked and somehow it’s already October?? I’m soon headed to New York for a fun mid-month get-away (note my calendar is closed for a little over a week and my vacation responder will be on for emails) but wanted to send this off before I’m officially signed off for a few days. Excited to host another sweater repair workshop and launch a mending club with my fellow mending expert, Lindsey of the Future Past, this fall!

Join me and Lindsey of The Future Past for Mend Club--a community mending circle to work on your projects, connect with sustainably minded folks, and get help from repair experts.

​This is not a structured class per se, rather a dedicated work time to keep each other accountable, meet other menders in your community, and learn from each other. We will help with any questions about how to approach your repairs, demonstrate techniques needed to tackle them, and provide advice and inspiration. Please only bring hand-mending projects (no machine work).

​We’ll have basic supplies on hand like scissors, seam rippers, needles, cutting matts, iron, etc but if you need specific tools or materials for your individual project, you can visit our friends Fabrix down the street ahead of time. Grab a snack from the Clement St farmer’s market just outside, and we’ll have hot tea for a cozy, hygge vibe.

Learn to repair holes in sweaters through woven darning. We will learn how to repair a ladder run, how to source yarn from your sweater for an exact color match, and practice both visible and invisible techniques on a sampler. Bring a sweater or two to practice on.

​(Optional) Darning kits will be available for purchase ($15 cash) after class to take home and include a long darning needle, snips, knit picker, and a snag-nab-it.

During my recent September sweater repair class, an attendee brought and showed me her beloved jacket that I had fixed last December—the repair was a gift from her incredibly thoughtful Boss! I fondly remember thrifting the perfect scrap pieces to color match the repair and bring new life to it. What a meaningful, personal gift to give!

This wasn’t the first time. Earlier this summer a client who had received a mended gift from his girlfriend by me, loved the gift and idea so much that he snuck his best friend’s flannel out of the laundry bin to bring me just in time for his birthday.

So, two ideas…it’s not too early to start gift planning…

1. “borrow” your partner/friend’s favorite piece without them knowing (or you can also tell them) and let me lovingly repair it. Wrap it up and put it under the tree, and it’ll be the most thoughtful, beautiful surprise!

2. Opt for a gift card and give them a suggestion of what piece you think they should have repaired. Ex. last year someone bought a gift card for me to add elbow patches to their boyfriend’s sweater. I worked with her ahead of time so the value of the card perfectly matched the service.

3. Gift a private sewing lesson or spot in an upcoming class via a gift card.
