Is ICE in your neighborhood? I’ll share what I’m seeing locally - let me know in the comments if you’re seeing these practices as well and what locals are doing to push back.
In the greater Richmond area, a local defense contractor won a $1.26 billion contract in July 2025. This contract went to Acquisition Logistics Company to build an “immigration detention center” at Fort Bliss in El Paso, Texas. It is expected to detain 5,000 people. In case you’re wondering why America is all of a sudden detaining people in army camps, it’s nothing new. America also did this back in World War 2 when it detained Japanese Americans in army camps, including at Fort Bliss. This contractor worked fast and a month after the deal, the new site was operational. As we all know, ICE is known for many things, including a lack of training. Within a month of opening
ICE’s own inspectors found that conditions at the facility violated at least 60 federal standards for immigrant detention. source
The Washington Post reported these violations included:
did not provide proper medical care, lacked basic procedures to keep detainees safe, and for weeks did not give them a way to contact lawyers or file complaints.
For people flying out of Richmond Airport, they’d be surprised to learn that, less than a mile away, there are people who have been kidnapped and are getting deported. This could very well be normal for airports and their airstrips. However, it’s worth discussing with your local and state officials to see if anything can be done to get ICE out.
In Hanover County, it’s one thing after another. Recently, residents celebrated a hard-fought victory against a data center. Now, ICE is eyeing up a warehouse to convert into a detention center. This warehouse isn’t in a rural part of town; it’s right off of I-95, across the street from a massive Bass Pro Shop. They’re not trying to hide what they’re doing. On Wednesday, January 28, the county’s board of supervisors will discuss this point. A massive crowd is expected to protest ICE coming to town.
I made a video on my stance on ICE:
TL;DW - I’m in favor of abolishing ICE and creating an immigration task force to have comprehensive immigration reform. If that resonates with you, then donate to our campaign today by clicking the button below. I’d be grateful if you signed up for a monthly donation at any amount.
