Surfer Sundays - Edition 2🏄🌊

This week was mostly a bunch of data structure and schema solidification, which is what I feel like I’m always working on. Have never taken a data structures class in my life and can’t imagine doing it after all this stuff. But now it’s done…until I decide to overhaul it three days later.

Also moved off of Mintlify for the docs. It’s cool and all, but I want to add an “Edit this page” button on the bottom of each page and some other custom things. Luckily, there’s a super cool Tailwind CSS template which allows you to make nice-looking documentation super easily. I think Mintlify might just be a semi-wrapper over this lol. Anyways here’s what the new docs look like (the logo is cooked, I know):

Also monorepo’d everything: the desktop app, python package and the docs. Super boring stuff but it’s great having everything in one place and hopefully makes it way easier to contribute as well. And GitHub also redirects old repos to the new ones which is a super underrated feature that is super useful. Shoutout GitHub and peep the monorepo: https://github.com/Surfer-Org/Protocol.

Finally, I’ve been thinking about Surfer wrappers. To be honest, I can build super cool demos off of Surfer Protocol (Spotify wrapped for iMessage, knowledge graphing my entire notion, training an actual AI to tweet like me not just using GPT, etc). How useful these wrappers are is anyone’s guess. I personally would maybe use the Spotify wrapped thing once and then that’s it. But maybe someone has a super specific use case that they really love and want to use.

With that said, I believe that something like Surfer should exist. People have been interested in their personal data for a long time and have been building projects related to/off of their personal data so there’s definitely a need for a protocol/community there. Whether there’s actual money in that is anyone’s guess.

However, I’m also curious to see if there’s value for businesses with this tech. So I’ll start looking into different businesses that need a personal data layer — whether that’s early-stage AI startups, ecommerce sellers, and more.
