This is my second attempt at a beta launch. The first one was for a desktop version that I have decided is not the right approach for the Navigator for a host of reasons.
So today is a beta launch of a completely rewritten web product.
To all those people posting on social media and newsletters that they vibe-coded an entire system in a day, congratulations. I have been building software analytical platforms for decades, and even with AI it is taking me months/years. Yes, the coding part is easy now. No argument from me there.
However, just because an agent can build fast doesn’t mean it is correct. Secondly, we are dealing with a highly interrelated data and coding system, so it really needs to be thoroughly checked for logic and for errors and, of course, if it adds any value.
Just to labour this point a little longer. I was able to rewrite the front end of the desktop app into a web app in a few days. That really is the easy part; the backend is where you earn your stripes. Enough intro, let’s get to it.
S2N Navigator is a complete quantitative research and trading platform, built around one idea: a laboratory where strategies are created, tested to death, and ruthlessly filtered in the most bias-free way possible. It is not on for everyone yet, and I am not going to dress that up. Early members will
be first in line as it opens. The same applies to the portfolio module; it is partially complete and needs more underlying strategies to be surfaced before testing is opened to beta users.
I have spent more than twenty-five years managing money professionally; I have a PhD in behavioural finance, which is a long way of saying I have watched a lot of smart people fool themselves with beautiful backtests and disorganised processes.
A curve that looks perfect on screen is the easiest thing in the world to build
and the most expensive thing in the world to trust. The gap between a backtest
that looks great and a strategy that survives contact with a live market is where
most people lose. I wanted to build the opposite of a highlight reel. I wanted a
place that is honest about what dies, and why, so the few things that survive
have actually earned it.
S2N Navigator does not sell you a winner. It shows you the search. You see the
ideas go in, you see most of them get killed, and you see the handful that make
it through, with the process left on the page.
I get to share my philosophy of money management and share progress in real-time with a community of traders and investors committed to becoming the best versions of themselves. I get to finally show people who have been burned by an industry focused on the sale what realistic assumptions look like with deep history and analysis. I want a place where people can learn from someone who has immersed themself in this space day and night for decades and been on both the sell and buy sides.
I could have polished this for another six months and launched something tidy.
I would rather you see it being built. Build-in-public means you watch the real
thing take shape, rough edges and all, and you get to shape it. Everything I
ship, you see. Everything I get wrong, you will see that too.
I do not put my name on anything I do not believe in completely. This has my name
all over it. I have received many questions on when I am launching, and I am starting to feel like a phoney saying in a couple of weeks or days, etc. So here it is.
Right now I am absorbing all the compute and data costs so you can build and
backtest for free through the beta. No card, no catch. Just for your information, when I test one strategy on one dataset, I typically do about 400 backtests. Each one runs for about 25 minutes in parallel; this is my investment, as the more ground I cover, the more value the Lab will offer the community.
Open it, build something, kill something, and tell me what you think. I read
every reply. I cannot do this without you.
