Just like Rebel, True North has pushed residential school denialism as well, misgendered trans kids for clicks, and framed their hatred as “free speech.”

They show up to these events not to report, but to perform — to create viral clips that can be fed back to their audience as “proof” that the left is out of touch and liberals are weak.

And this time? They got what they wanted.

So why did Mark Carney answer the way he did?

It wasn’t confusion. It wasn’t ignorance. It was strategy — the hallmark of Liberal “popularism.”

The idea that if you just calibrate your language enough, hit the right notes in the right order, and don’t spook the mythical moderate voter, you’ll win.

This is how they train Liberals: Never stick your neck out. Never lead public opinion, just follow it from a safe distance. Speak in values, but never take a stand.

Because the second you start playing by the far-right’s rules, you’ve already lost.

You can’t negotiate with it.

Liberal popularism has failed everywhere it’s been tried.

In the UK, Labour’s slow crawl toward appeasing transphobic rhetoric gave cover to a moral collapse.

Now, the Supreme Court has ruled that legal protections for “women” only apply to biological women, erasing trans and non-binary people from the law.

This didn’t happen overnight.

It happened through years of cowardice, the laundering of junk science, and the mainstreaming of hate by figures like J.K. Rowling, a billionaire bigot/TERF whose views were treated as “reasonable debate” while real lives were put at risk.

In the U.S., over 400 anti-LGBTQ+ bills were passed in state legislatures during Biden’s presidency.

He had the bully pulpit. He had executive power. He had the opportunity to draw a line in the sand.

Instead, his administration softened on gender-affirming care, signalling they were open to compromise with people who want trans youth dead or erased.

The result?

The Overton window shifted again, and now Trump is back in office, carrying out mass deportations and targeting trans communities with surgical cruelty.

Same-sex marriage is next on the Supreme Court’s chopping block, and everyone knows it, but Chuck Schumer and the rest of the centrist Democrats are too busy rehearsing “civility” talking points to fight like hell.

This is the playbook: Liberals compromise.

The right refuses.

Liberals try to “find middle ground.”

The right moves the ground underneath them.

And by the time the centre collapses, it's already too late.

The so-called “bipartisan” border bill the Biden administration pushed was one of the most draconian anti-migrant policies in modern U.S. history. A violation of international law, which clearly wasn’t extreme enough for Donald Trump, Stephen Miller, and the Heritage Foundation.

And when Republicans rejected it at Trump’s request, he turned around and made the whole thing seem reasonable by comparison.

That’s how you launder fascism into mainstream politics: not through honest debate, but by having spineless opposition that sells out people’s lives for bad polling and a pat on the head from legacy media.

Carney isn’t alone in this failure. He’s just the latest product of a liberal political class that thinks cowardice is strategy and that compromise with bigotry is leadership.

But here’s the truth: If you’re not willing to stand up when the far right attacks trans people, migrants, Muslims, or Palestinians, then you are not a firewall against fascism.

You are the kindling.

Because we all know damn well what would’ve happened if the Q&A had been stacked with outlets like The Breach, Ricochet, PressProgress, or The Tyee.

If someone had stood up and asked Carney about nationalizing oil companies or abolishing corporate tax havens, the commission would’ve called it “radical activism.”

Pundits would’ve cried “bias.”

The Liberals would’ve clutched their pearls about “unprofessional conduct.”

But when Rebel News — a declared third-party political actor flagged by Elections Canada for partisan activity — shows up to inject culture war bile into the discourse, they get treated like legitimate press.

This wasn’t an accident.

It wasn’t some “free speech” moment.

It was state-sanctioned legitimacy for a propaganda operation.

Here’s the part nobody wants to admit: Rebel isn’t media.

They’re political actors in costume.

They are registered to influence the election. That’s not a secret. That’s a matter of public record.

The moment the commission let them in, the premise of neutrality collapsed.

So why were they there getting questions?

Simple: the commission got played. Again.

They knew Ezra Levant would throw one of his usual tantrums—whining about censorship, threatening lawsuits, flailing like the pathetic man-child he is—and they caved before he even had to call a lawyer.

That’s the classic “both sides” game — let the far-right in to avoid being accused of bias, but never extend the same courtesy to the left.

It’s Cold War thinking hardwired into our democratic institutions: treat the right as rowdy family, and the left as dangerous outsiders.

Let’s say the quiet part loud: This is how fascism gets normalized.

Not through military intervention and coups, but through polite nods from debate moderators, access passes for hate-mongers, and editorial silence from the very press that’s supposed to speak truth to power.

This isn’t about free speech. It’s about power.

It’s about who gets to ask the questions, and who gets asked nothing at all.

And it’s about a political class that would rather coddle far-right agitators than risk being called “too left.”

Let’s make it very clear: Liberalism isn’t a firewall against fascism — it’s the plywood holding the door open just long enough for it to walk through.
