A Monumental Finish Awaits Penshaw Trail Runners
Penshaw's 10K and Half Marathon bring runners to the trails around Sunderland before a memorable finish at Penshaw Monument...
Few races can offer a finish quite like the one awaiting runners at Penshaw on Sunday 4 October 2026, when the Penshaw 10K and Half Marathon return to Sunderland.
Both Trail Outlaws races explore the trails around Penshaw, with Herrington Country Park providing the race-day base. The defining landmark is Penshaw Monument, which provides a suitably dramatic setting for runners tackling the area's hills.
The two distances offer different challenges. The Penshaw 10K takes runners onto the trails surrounding Penshaw Monument and the River Wear, with plenty of climbing packed into the shorter distance. It also has a special place in the history of Trail Outlaws as the organiser's first race and is now part of its Urban Trail Series.
Half Marathon runners get a longer exploration of the area. The 13.2-mile route includes 1,591 feet of ascent and follows trails on both the north and south sides of the River Wear, offering views along the river and opportunities to see its wildlife and wildfowl.
This is very different territory from a conventional road race. Suitable shoes for the ground conditions are mandatory, while the courses are marked and marshalled at key points. Half Marathon runners also have checkpoints providing water and sweets along the route and must complete the course within three and a half hours.
There is some impressive Half Marathon history to follow. Ian Harding set the men's course record of 1:26:58 in 2022, while former Olympian Aly Dixon established the women's record of 1:42:12 in the same year.
Herrington Country Park in Sunderland provides a useful base for accompanying families too, with a children's play area, woodland and trail walks among its facilities.
Finishers receive a bespoke medal and race memento, with electronic timing and digital race photography also included.
Whether taking on the 10K or Half Marathon, Penshaw offers runners a distinctive combination of riverside trails, serious climbing and one of Sunderland's best-known landmarks.
