There’s an empty flagpole standing in Mecca right now. Three men signed a pact under it two weeks ago - a Crown Prince, a President, and a Prime Minister - and swore that an attack on one is an attack on all three. NATO’s Article 5, dressed in a Muslim robe.
Now there’s a report that a fourth flag might be headed for that pole. And the country in line for it isn’t a swing state or a neutral bystander. It’s the regime in Tehran.
If this is confirmed, the alliance formed two weeks ago on the Arabian Peninsula stops being a Gulf security arrangement and becomes something far bigger, and far more dangerous - a bloc that stretches from the Bosphorus to the Indus, armed with nuclear weapons on one end and nuclear ambitions on the other, with a NATO member sitting at its center.
