Earlier this week I saw a video on Reddit titled “Kid breaks into bird enclosure at the zoo to chase birds with a stick” (the video has since been removed). In it, a kid who looked 13 or so was chasing a group of turkeys around an enclosure with a stick. My read was instant and uncharitable: this little piece of shit kid is doing this for shits and giggles.
I went to the comments. They were about what you’d expect from Reddit - “me rooting for the birds,” “disappointed the birds didn’t get a good nip in” - not as vicious as I’d expected, but still a pile-on. And like everyone else, I had my conclusion locked in within about fifteen seconds: video, headline, top comments, verdict, move on to the next outrageous thing the internet has queued up for me.
Then I read the family’s statement, and I felt like an asshole.
