When I am in need of inspiration, one of my favourite things to do is to browse runway fashion on Pinterest. So I thought I’d share a few random images here that I’ve collected over the years!
These couture pieces are obviously incredible works of art, made with exquisite craftsmanship to be appreciated in their own right. But beyond that, I find fashion can also be a direct source of inspiration for illustrations. From the fit and material of an outfit to small embellishments and details, what a person wears can tell us a lot about them, either literally or symbolically. This adds layers of “reading” to an illustration, imbuing it with story or meaning.
Clothing can also be used to create distinctive shapes and strong value structures within an image, and be a way to introduce pattern and texture. All of these things create visual interest, which holds the viewer’s attention or guides their eye through the composition. Taking cues from fashion design to create a unique look for characters can add just that extra touch of detail to an illustration, making it stand out and hold an audience captive.
