Docs making sense of the senseless

• Remake. How [Director Ross McElwee] makes sense of a senseless loss pushes Remake out of pure tragedy to become a stirring tribute to his son through their shared life in film, while also addressing his own brush with mortality (AV Club).

• Baby Doe. “For her tremendous second feature…. [director Jessica Earnshaw] ventures into the kind of working class, deeply religious enclave that is typically overlooked in America” (Variety).

A sense of place and time

• Do You Love Me. “A head-spinning and heartfelt mosaic of Lebanon…[director Lana Daher] assembles excerpts from feature films, documentaries, home movies, archive TV footage and elsewhere” (Financial Times).

• Reading Lolita in Tehran. “Eran Riklis’s decades-spanning film feels sporadic to a fault at times, but is elevated by the rebellious spirit of its central character, played by Golshifteh Farahani” (Variety).

Celebrity passes and scam calls

• Gail Daughtry and the Celebrity Sex Pass. “The tourism board should study how Wain sells a tacky California vacation. Hollywood Boulevard hasn’t looked this fetchingly sleazy since Pretty Woman” (LA Times).

• Night Nurse. “At times, Night Nurse recalls both Steven Shainberg’s Secretary and Cronenberg’s Crash” (RogerEbert.com).

• Bonnie Tyler, Total Eclipse of the Heart and Holding Out for a Hero singer, dies at 75. She was the first Welsh person to top the US charts.

• ITV and Comcast’s Sky reshape British TV landscape. The merger, intended to help Sky compete with the streamers, would account for ~70% of the UK linear tv advertising market.

• Could the U.K. stop the Skydance / Warner Bros. deal from closing, even if it wanted to? Paramount Skydance execs were left scrambling after comments from the British culture secretary indicated intervention curiousity.

• Amazon MGM Studios rethinks its restructure. Kara Smith has been named head of Drama with Comedy and Young Adult Heads to be announced.

• Netflix discovers the Youtube playbook. Netflix is adding video clips from digital publishers to its homepage, including Penske, Buzzfeed, and Conde Nast.
