An eight-year-old from Tain has triumphed at a recent martial arts championship.
Maisie Torley came away from the MTF British Championships which took place in Dagenham on August 15, with two gold, a silver and a bronze for Tang Soo Do.
Tang Soo Do is a Korean martial art which combines elements of Okinawan karate, Chinese kung fu and traditional Korean kicking techniques.
The P5 pupil, who suffers from ADHD and autism, was accompanied by her dad to the event, with both her parents saying they are “incredibly proud” of her.
Maisie’s mum Elaine Torley said: “It was not expected at all, and this was the first big event she had to travel for, although she has competed in other championships closer to home before.
“Competitions don’t come cheap and she had that bit of pressure, and had not long recovered from a broken toe.
“She thought she wouldn’t do well, but she pulled it out of the bag.”
Maisie has been practicing Tang Soo Do since she was four years old at Highland Soo Bahk Do in Invergordon under SBN Maggie Sweeney and Master Scott Sweeney.
She took home golds for open weapon and sparring, silver for bo staff and bronze for hyungs.
Mrs Torley continued: “We’re really really proud of Maisie.
”It’s so good for little ones to build their confidence, learn self defence and self-discipline.
“The club in Invergordon have been really supportive and Maggie and Scott are great with Maisie.”
One of the golds Maisie took home was for her double fan performance — one that she thought she was not going to be able to perform.
“She was incredible,” added Mrs Torley.
“Maisie has gone through all the kids level belts from white to black and is now on the adults levels and will be on brown belt in the up coming weeks. That’s a big thing at her age.”
