I’m excited to share the latest episode of The Blessings of Liberty, which features a wonderful conversation with Pulitzer Prize-winning historian Beverly Gage about her new book, This Land is Your Land: A Road Trip Through U.S. History. To commemorate A250, Gage traveled to historic sites in thirteen states, from Philadelphia to California, and writes about the unexpected stories they reveal that have defined American history.
The stories include famous figures, such as George Washington, whom Gage calls America’s “original road tripper” because of his extensive presidential travels in New England and the South. But Gage also tells the stories about lesser-known figures, such as Gerritt Smith, the nineteenth-century version of the “billionaire philanthropist” who funded social movements in upstate New York like abolitionism and womens’ rights; after John Brown’s raid, a $100 check from Smith was found in Brown’s pocket.
