Why We Reach for the Spirit World

Is it desperation, curiosity, or simply a need to know, which drives us to seek help from the unknown, from the world beyond, or that mysterious space or void which may or may not hold the secrets of the universe, looking for answers we cannot, or are not able to find on our own?

There are so many reasons for people to want to consult a psychic, a card reader, fortune teller, seer or similar. We want to know about our future, our love life, relationships. Work, business, kids, legal issues, purpose in life, moving, marriage…and on and on the list goes. In other words, so many of us seek the help of strangers, those who purport to have the ability to “know” to “see” further than the ordinary knowing and seeing and reasoning that exists in our ordinary daily lives.

However, consulting a spiritual medium, needing to consult a spiritual medium, is something else again. Consulting a spiritual medium means that first and foremost, you are wanting to make a connection To make a connection to someone who has died and is no longer of this world, the physical world, and who has passed to a different plane of existence.

To clarify, a medium can be, and usually is psychic; a medium is able to “see”, has a “knowing sense” and will certainly be able to guide and give advice in every aspect of a persons life, to see the future and also the past, and so so much more. Without the aid of cards or a Crystal Ball, runes or dice; without the trappings that so many psychics seem to use.

Again, to clarify, a medium has only one role, which is to act for and on behalf of those in the spirit world. To act as a conduit, a messenger, a voice, for those who, unseen by most, are not only unseen and unheard, but are often unintentionally ignored and who are desperate for us to communicate with them. To let us know that they are still very much a part of our lives, involved, caring and trying to guide us the best way they can…if only we would listen…pay attention…and most importantly, reach out.

As a spiritual medium, I am often asked, “if the spirit world exists, if my loved ones are truly there for me, concerned for me, then why haven’t I received any messages, why haven’t they contacted me?” My answer is always the same. “Have you given them a chance? Have you contacted a medium? Do you spend ten minutes a day just to be with them? And when was the last time you actually did spend time quietly and deliberately listening to the sounds and the energy around you?

Of course, most people don’t understand the need to do any of those things, and if they did understand they have no idea how to begin. For example…we all know that, as in all walks of life, there are fakes and charlatans out there so how can we tell the difference between them? Spending ten minutes to connect with our loved ones in the spirit world sounds very doable, but the minutes can tick by endlessly unless we know how we are supposed to spend those ten minutes. And what does it mean when we are supposed to be listening…for what? And for how long? So as much as we might really want to make those connections, it seems that there are so many hurdles in our way.

I never had any desire to be a medium, even when I was old enough, wise enough, to understand what a medium was. I admit to my stubbornness, to my fear of the responsibilities, and the concern that I wasn’t going to be able to handle the pain and heartache of those who were desperate and heartbroken from their losses. And my biggest fear…because of my faith in God, in Christ as my savior, and in my beliefs. ..was that mediumship somehow went against those beliefs. My biggest fear? Would I somehow be allowing a darkness, an evil, a malevolent force, to infect my soul? And so I prayed…and I prayed…and I prayed! I asked God, I asked Christ, to guide and so steer me and to always keep me in the light, and to protect me from all that was evil. And then…I trusted! It is easy for any of us to say that we believe, that we have faith. It is a whole other thing to LIVE that faith…to follow our beliefs…every day. And so…I trusted! And I trust still!

Over the years, especially during my public events, on social media, and even to this day, after more than forty years of working full time as a spiritual medium, there are those who condemn the work that I do, they condemn me, and of course, they are entitled to their opinions, as I am to mine.

My faith in God, in a higher power , my relationship with Christ, who I try so hard to emulate, and who I fail time and time again, even as He never fails me, is as strong as it has ever been. And as I work, as I use my abilities as a medium, and as I work as the voice of the spirit world, my responsibility always first to them, and with kindness and gentleness, and with my spirit guide Grey Eagle by my side, I realize every day how much I am truly blessed.

I stand in the light, and the love of God washes over me and fills me with joy!

If this article has left you with more questions, you’re not alone.

That’s exactly why my daughter Samantha and I created Between Heaven & Earth—a new video and podcast series where we have real conversations about life, death and the Spirit World. In episode 1 we explore one the questions everyone wants to ask a spiritual medium:

What really happens during a consultation?
