“Get to Stepping” is a quick instrumental track, high energy and for the most part simple. It was an exercise in 80s/90s electronic music with transitions and beat variations. I tried to get away from the verse/chorus/verse/chorus/bridge/chorus structure and instead wove between two main point/counterpoint sections.
Because I was trying to bridge the two decades together, I layered an Acid V melody with other synth sounds. I was very pleased with how it ended up sounding like a single instrument, almost like a guitar pedal that can output a clean and processed signal that ends up sounding like one singular blended tone.
Also present is some sidechaining with the kick drum and a virtual tape machine. Neat! I learned that sidechain trick here (R.I.P., Computer Music Magazine).
What do you think? Did I capture the 80s/90s electronic vibe? Could I have squeezed another couple of minutes out of it or is the length just right? Let me know in the comments!
Thanks for reading. RömHeadTech is my electronic-based 90s leaning music project. Start the Tape is my folktronic project. We’re available at romheadtech.bandcamp.com and startthetape.bandcamp.com and subvert.fm/romheadtech. And I also write the Post-Imperial Review.
