One year ago, I published the first essay on this Substack.
At the time, I had no grand ambitions for what it might become. Like many writers, I simply wanted a place to think aloud about the issues that fascinated me: economics, public policy, technology, international affairs, and the social questions that increasingly shape our lives. My hope was modest. If a handful of thoughtful people found value in those reflections, the effort would be worthwhile. I was not trying to build a publication. I was trying to think more clearly - and I have always found that writing is the most reliable instrument for that purpose.
A year later, the audience has grown beyond anything I anticipated. Over 40,000 people now subscribe, and the publication receives close to 200,000 views each month, with approximately 500 new readers arriving every day. I share those numbers not to dwell on metrics but because they reflect something I did not expect: a genuine appetite, among a wide and diverse readership, for the kind of slow, analytical engagement with ideas that the rest of the media landscape seems increasingly reluctant to provide. For that appetite, and for the trust readers have extended to this publication, I am deeply grateful.
One of the genuine surprises of this first year has been the realization that serious readers are not nearly as rare as we sometimes imagine. Modern media often gives the impression that thoughtful analysis has been displaced by outrage, that complexity has yielded to certainty, and that attention spans have become too short for sustained argument. Yet the growth of this publication suggests a different possibility. Perhaps people have not lost the desire to think deeply after all. Perhaps what they have been missing are places where sustained, thoughtful engagement with ideas is still valued. Perhaps they have simply become hungry for places where that kind of thinking is still welcomed.
Yet this essay is not really about growth. Those are outcomes, and outcomes are the easy part to observe. More interesting to me are the lessons that emerged from a year spent examining the forces reshaping our world - and why those lessons feel more urgent to me today than when I first began asking the questions that eventually led to them. Because the more I have written, the more convinced I have become that the central intellectual failure of our moment is not a shortage of information or analysis. It is a failure of the imagination - specifically, the failure to ask what happens next.
Over the past twelve months, I have written about inflation, artificial intelligence, trade, immigration, education, criminal justice, global affairs, and the future of work. At first glance, these subjects appear unrelated. They occupy different headlines, different academic disciplines, and often different political camps. But as I reflected on the essays collectively, I realized that I had been returning to the same underlying question again and again: why do so many policies, decisions, and movements produce results that nobody expected? The answer, I increasingly suspect, is that we have become remarkably good at discussing immediate effects while becoming remarkably poor at considering what comes next.

Modern life rewards immediacy. Political campaigns are measured in election cycles. Public companies are judged quarter by quarter. News organizations compete for attention minute by minute. Social media compresses complex issues into a handful of words and demands instantaneous reactions. The entire architecture of contemporary public life is designed to privilege the immediate, the visible, and the simple over the delayed, the diffuse, and the complex.
In such an environment, it is hardly surprising that public discourse so consistently gravitates toward first-order effects - the consequences that are easiest to see and fastest to arrive. A tariff is proposed, and the discussion centers on the protected industry. An immigration policy changes, and the debate focuses on labor supply. A new technology emerges, and the headlines celebrate productivity. A government launches a social program, and the coverage describes expanded access to a benefit. These observations are not wrong. The problem is that they are radically incomplete, and the gap between what is observed immediately and what ultimately transpires is often where the most consequential effects reside.
Consider a few examples drawn from recent history. When rent control policies were introduced in cities across the United States and Europe, the first-order effect was exactly as advertised: existing tenants paid lower rents. What followed - reduced housing supply, deteriorating maintenance, the conversion of rental units to condominiums, and a long-run increase in housing costs for those who could not access the controlled market - was less celebrated, but considerably more significant in aggregate. Or consider the opioid crisis. The first-order effect of aggressive prescription practices was the management of patient pain. The third-order effect was one of the worst drug epidemics in American history, claiming hundreds of thousands of lives. Or consider quantitative easing, deployed with genuine urgency after the 2008 financial crisis: the first-order effect was the stabilization of financial markets; the second-order effect was a decade-long inflation of asset prices that transferred wealth from those who owned little to those who owned much, widening inequality in ways that remain politically destabilizing today.
The pattern repeats across domains and across decades. The first-order effect is often visible immediately. The second- and third-order effects emerge more slowly, operate more diffusely, and are therefore far easier to ignore - until they are impossible to ignore. History suggests that the latter are almost always the ones that matter most.
What happens after that? The question sounds simple. Yet it is astonishing how often it goes unasked.
As the year progressed, I began to recognize a pattern in my own thinking. Whether examining economic policy, educational reform, artificial intelligence, or international trade, I found myself repeatedly returning to a common set of questions: What is the immediate effect? What are the likely secondary effects? What are the tertiary effects? Who benefits? Who bears the costs? How do incentives change as a result? And what happens if this trend continues for five, ten, or twenty years?
None of these questions is novel in isolation. Economists, historians, philosophers, and policymakers have wrestled with each of them for generations. What struck me was how rarely they are considered together in public discussion - and how much the failure to consider them together accounts for the persistent gap between what policies intend and what they produce. A conversation that asks only about immediate effects is a conversation that has already accepted a structural blind spot. It has decided, in advance, that the most important consequences are the ones that happen first.
Over time, I began half-jokingly referring to this collection of questions as the Spillere Approach - not because it represents a new theory of society or a proprietary analytical method, but because naming a framework, even informally, forces you to take it seriously. The label matters less than the discipline it encodes. What the framework ultimately demands is a particular posture toward analysis: a willingness to follow a chain of consequences past the point where it becomes uncomfortable, to ask who gains and who loses not just in the first round but in the second and third, and to resist the temptation to declare a problem solved simply because its most visible symptoms have been addressed.
Its purpose is not to predict the future with certainty. No framework can accomplish that, and any that claims otherwise should be regarded with deep suspicion. Rather, its purpose is to cultivate intellectual humility - to force an acknowledgment that every decision creates consequences beyond those we initially intend, and that the consequences we fail to anticipate are often the ones that define the outcome. The future remains genuinely uncertain. But the quality of the questions we bring to it determines the quality of the thinking we can do about it. Asking better questions does not guarantee better answers. It simply makes them possible.
This may be the oldest lesson in economics, but it remains among the most persistently misunderstood - partly because understanding it requires confronting a truth that is psychologically uncomfortable: that the outcomes of human action depend less on the motivations behind it than on the structural environment in which it occurs. Most policies are proposed by people who genuinely wish to improve society. Most organizational decisions are made by leaders who sincerely believe they are acting responsibly. Most technological innovations are introduced with aspirations that are, at minimum, not malicious. And yet the graveyard of policy is filled with well-intentioned interventions that produced the opposite of what they sought.
The reason is not moral failure. It is analytical failure - specifically, the failure to trace how people will actually respond to the incentives a policy creates, rather than how its architects hoped they would respond. Friedrich Hayek spent much of his career making precisely this point: that the dispersed, decentralized information embedded in prices and incentive structures exceeds the capacity of any planner to replicate or anticipate. Prices are not merely numbers; they are signals that coordinate the behavior of millions of individuals who will never meet one another and never share their knowledge with a central authority. Intervene in that system without understanding the signals you are disrupting, and you will reliably produce consequences you did not intend.
Understanding incentives does not require cynicism about human nature. It requires realism about human behavior. The question is never simply whether people are good or bad - they are, in the usual distribution, a mixture of both - but rather how the systems we design encourage particular behaviors, whether those behaviors are the ones we actually want, and what happens when the incentives embedded in a policy diverge from the purposes it is supposed to serve. Most policy failures, examined carefully, are failures of incentive design rather than failures of effort or goodwill. That distinction matters enormously, because it suggests that the path to better outcomes runs through better analysis, not better intentions.
Every decision involves a trade-off, but not every trade-off is equally visible. Some costs appear immediately and are easily quantified: the price of a good, the rate of a tax, the number of jobs eliminated by a policy change. Others arrive quietly, accumulate gradually, and resist easy measurement - which is precisely why they are so often overlooked in the analysis that precedes a decision and so often absent from the evaluation that follows it.
Inflation provides the clearest illustration I know of this asymmetry. The visible effect of inflation is rising prices, which everyone experiences and everyone complains about. The less visible effects are considerably more consequential: the gradual erosion of purchasing power among those who hold savings in cash, the transfer of wealth from creditors to debtors and from wage earners to asset owners, the slow deterioration of trust in currency and in the institutions responsible for managing it, and the distortion of investment decisions as businesses and households struggle to plan in an environment of monetary uncertainty. Milton Friedman described inflation as a form of taxation without legislation - a hidden levy whose burden falls disproportionately on those least equipped to protect themselves from it. The tax is real. It is simply invisible enough to be politically convenient.
The nineteenth-century French economist Frédéric Bastiat captured this asymmetry with characteristic precision in his distinction between the seen and the unseen. The seen is what a policy produces directly and immediately - the factory saved by a tariff, the road built by a stimulus program, the benefit extended by a new entitlement. The unseen is what the same policy forecloses: the industries that did not develop because the protected one consumed the available capital, the private investment that did not occur because the government borrowed the funds to finance its spending, the behaviors that subtly shifted in response to the new incentive structure. Bastiat’s insight was not that the unseen is always larger than the seen - sometimes it is not - but that it is always real, and that any analysis which ignores it is incomplete by construction. Learning to see the unseen, to insist on asking what was given up and not just what was gained, is among the most important intellectual habits available to anyone who wants to think seriously about policy.
Artificial intelligence dominated a remarkable share of public conversation over the past year, and for reasons that are easy to understand. The pace of advancement has been extraordinary by any historical standard, and the potential applications - in medicine, education, scientific research, and economic production - are genuinely transformative. It would be intellectually dishonest to pretend otherwise. But one observation, which emerged across many of the essays I wrote on this subject, became increasingly difficult to dismiss: technology evolves rapidly, and human nature evolves slowly. That gap is where most of the interesting and difficult questions live.
The same desires, fears, biases, ambitions, and tribal instincts that shaped the behavior of human societies centuries ago remain present and operative today. New technologies do not replace those tendencies; they amplify them, extend their reach, and give them new instruments of expression. The printing press democratized access to information and also fueled religious wars of extraordinary brutality. The telegraph and then the telephone accelerated commerce and also accelerated the coordination of military campaigns. Television was supposed to create an informed citizenry; it produced, among other things, a politics organized around performance and image. Social media promised to connect the world; it has also become one of the most effective engines of outrage, polarization, and epistemic fragmentation in human history. In each case, the technology was genuinely new. The human tendencies it amplified were not.
Artificial intelligence will almost certainly follow the same pattern. It will transform education, employment, and scientific discovery in ways that are difficult to fully anticipate. It will also, unless we are considerably more thoughtful than we have been in previous technological transitions, amplify existing inequalities, accelerate the spread of misinformation, reduce the cognitive independence of those who rely on it uncritically, and concentrate economic and political power in ways that may be very difficult to reverse once they are established. None of this argues against artificial intelligence as a technology. It argues for approaching it with the same analytical seriousness we would bring to any powerful tool: attending not only to what it does immediately, but to what it produces one and two orders downstream, across the full distribution of people and institutions affected by it.
Healthy institutions are among civilization’s most fragile and most valuable achievements. They are fragile because they depend on something that cannot be legislated into existence: the accumulated trust, competence, and legitimacy that develops over decades of reasonably consistent performance. They are valuable because they encode solutions to collective action problems that would otherwise be extraordinarily costly to solve - how to adjudicate disputes, how to coordinate behavior at scale, how to sustain cooperation across generations and across the boundaries of family and tribe. The legal system, the central bank, the research university, the independent judiciary, the free press: each of these represents a hard-won answer to the question of how strangers can organize themselves well enough to build something larger than any one of them could build alone.
What strikes me, surveying the landscape of institutional trust over the past decade, is how much of that accumulated capital has been spent down - and how little attention has been paid to the question of what replaces it. The political scientist Francis Fukuyama has written extensively about the relationship between social trust and institutional performance: high-trust societies can sustain institutions that require cooperation and deferred gratification; low-trust societies cannot. That dynamic is not merely a sociological observation. It is a practical constraint on what governance is capable of achieving. An institution whose authority is no longer broadly accepted cannot perform many of its most important functions - not because its formal powers have been revoked, but because the informal legitimacy that makes formal power effective has quietly eroded.
No institution is perfect. All require scrutiny, accountability, and periodic reform. The point is not that existing institutions should be immune from criticism or that their failures should go unexamined. The point is that the act of questioning institutions - which is necessary and healthy when done carefully - can accelerate the very decay it purports to address when done carelessly, and that the costs of institutional collapse are almost always higher, and more widely distributed, than those who initiate the collapse anticipate. Building a functioning legal system, a credible currency, a trusted public health infrastructure, or a legitimate international order takes generations. Undermining any of them takes considerably less time. History offers many examples of societies that discovered this asymmetry too late to do much about it.
The fifth lesson is perhaps the most personal, and the most difficult to hold onto in the current cultural environment. We live in an era that rewards certainty. Social media amplifies the confident voice and buries the qualified one. Algorithms surface the definitive claim and filter out the carefully hedged analysis. The incentive structure of contemporary public discourse systematically punishes nuance and rewards the clean, shareable, emotionally satisfying conclusion. In this environment, the willingness to say ‘I’m not sure’ or ‘the evidence points in both directions’ or ‘this depends on assumptions I cannot fully verify’ requires a form of intellectual courage that is underappreciated because it is so often mistaken for weakness.
The philosopher Karl Popper argued that what distinguishes genuine scientific inquiry from ideology is falsifiability: a real theory must be capable of being proven wrong, must make predictions that could in principle fail to materialize, must be willing to submit itself to the test of evidence rather than simply accumulating interpretations that support conclusions already reached. That criterion applies well beyond the laboratory. The willingness to update one’s views in light of contrary evidence, to treat one’s own conclusions as provisional rather than settled, to remain genuinely open to the possibility that one’s analytical framework is incomplete - these are not signs of intellectual weakness. They are signs of intellectual seriousness. The alternative - the comfortable certainty of the person who has already decided and is now simply looking for confirmation - produces a kind of analysis that is confident, readable, and systematically unreliable.
What has made this publication worth building, I think - and what the reader response over this year has consistently confirmed - is not that it provides the right answers to difficult questions. It is that it tries to ask better questions, and to hold those questions open long enough to think through them carefully. Many readers who follow this publication disagree with one another politically. Some approach issues from progressive perspectives, others from conservative or libertarian viewpoints, and many occupy various positions in between. What they share, or what the best of them share, is a commitment to thinking through problems rather than retreating immediately to predetermined conclusions - a recognition that the most interesting and consequential questions resist the categories that partisan argument imposes on them. Curiosity, it turns out, is not in short supply among serious readers. It simply requires cultivation, and a cultural space in which it is valued rather than penalized.

Every era believes its challenges are unprecedented. Most are wrong - the tendency to see one’s own moment as uniquely consequential is itself one of the more reliable features of human psychology, available in every century and exploited by every generation of alarmists. But there are genuine exceptions: moments when the rate of change accelerates beyond what existing institutions can absorb, when multiple large structural forces compound rather than merely coexist, when problems that have been deferred for decades present themselves simultaneously and demand answers that the available political vocabulary is poorly equipped to provide. These moments are rare. I believe we are living through one of them.
This is not a rhetorical claim designed to generate urgency. It is a structural observation about the convergence of several forces, each of which would constitute a significant challenge in isolation, but which together create a compounding problem of a different order. The habits of mind this publication has been developing over the past year - attending to second- and third-order consequences, distinguishing the visible from the invisible, resisting the comfort of first-order thinking - are not merely useful intellectual exercises. At this particular moment, they are something closer to a civic necessity.
Artificial intelligence is no longer a research agenda or a set of promising laboratory results. It is an economic and social force that is actively reshaping industries, labor markets, and the cognitive life of individuals and institutions in real time. The first-order observation is by now familiar: AI increases productivity, accelerates scientific discovery, reduces the cost of information-intensive tasks, and makes certain forms of expertise broadly accessible. These effects are real, and in many respects genuinely beneficial. They are also, from an analytical standpoint, the least interesting part of the story.
The second- and third-order consequences are where the important questions live. What happens to labor markets when AI can perform not merely routine computation but creative synthesis, legal analysis, medical diagnosis, and strategic planning? Not in a distant hypothetical future, but in the next five to ten years, as capabilities continue to compound? What happens to education systems that were designed to produce precisely the cognitive skills that are now increasingly automatable - and to the young people who invested years and significant resources acquiring those skills in the expectation that they would retain their value? What happens to the shared epistemic environment on which democratic deliberation depends when the cost of producing convincing, personalized misinformation approaches zero? And what happens to the distribution of economic and political power when the most transformative technology in a generation is controlled by a small number of private actors operating largely outside the institutional frameworks designed to ensure that powerful technologies serve broad social purposes rather than narrow ones?
The economist Tyler Cowen has written compellingly about a world increasingly bifurcated between those who effectively harness AI and those who are sidelined by it - a divergence that does not follow existing class lines cleanly but cuts across them in ways that existing redistributive mechanisms are poorly designed to address. That divergence is not inevitable. The distribution of technological gains is always shaped by institutional choices, as Daron Acemoglu and Simon Johnson have argued at length, and those choices are still being made. But the window for making them well is not unlimited. The consequences of failing to govern this technology thoughtfully will not announce themselves all at once; they will accumulate gradually, become entrenched quietly, and present themselves as irreversible facts at the moment when reversing them would require the most political will.
For roughly three decades after the Cold War, the governing assumption among Western foreign policy elites was that economic interdependence would gradually constrain geopolitical rivalry. As trade, investment, and institutional integration deepened, the argument went, the costs of conflict would become prohibitive and the logic of cooperation would prevail. This assumption was not irrational given the evidence available in 1995 or even 2005. It has been fairly decisively refuted by the evidence available now.
Great-power competition has returned with a seriousness and a structural depth not seen since the Cold War. The contest is not merely military, though it is that too. It is technological - centered on semiconductor supply chains, artificial intelligence capabilities, and the infrastructure of digital communications. It is financial - centered on the role of the dollar, the architecture of the global payments system, and the ability to impose economic costs through sanctions. And it is institutional - centered on the question of whether the multilateral bodies built to manage international cooperation can function effectively when their most powerful members are pursuing fundamentally incompatible visions of international order. The decisions being made right now about export controls, alliance structures, currency arrangements, and the governance of emerging technologies will shape the distribution of global power for a generation. Most of those decisions are being made by people thinking in terms of the next election cycle.
What makes this moment particularly difficult is that the institutional architecture inherited from the post-war order was designed for a world of relative cooperation among major powers. It was not designed for rivalry. Adapting it - building the new frameworks, norms, and agreements that great-power competition in the twenty-first century requires - demands exactly the kind of long-horizon, second-order thinking that modern democratic politics is structurally worst at producing. The geopolitical order is not collapsing. But it is being renegotiated under considerable pressure, in real time, and the outcome will be determined far more by the quality of the questions being asked now than by the confidence of the answers being asserted.
Birth rates across the developed world have fallen below replacement level, and in many countries the decline is accelerating rather than stabilizing. In South Korea, the total fertility rate has fallen below 0.75 - less than half the replacement level of 2.1. Japan, Italy, Spain, Germany, and much of Eastern Europe face similar trajectories, with populations already beginning to decline in absolute terms. Even the United States, long insulated by relatively high immigration and somewhat higher fertility than its peer nations, is no longer reliably above replacement. This is not a future problem. It is an unfolding one, with consequences that are already embedded in the demographic data and accruing with each passing year.
The fiscal implications alone are staggering. Pension systems designed when there were five or six workers for every retiree now operate - or soon will operate - with ratios of two or three to one. Healthcare systems face rising demand precisely as the workforce that funds them shrinks. The political economy of aging societies, in which a growing share of the electorate depends directly on public transfers while a shrinking share of the workforce funds them, creates incentive structures for politicians that are almost perfectly misaligned with the long-run interests of their societies. Demography is unusual among the social sciences in offering forecasts of unusually high reliability at long time horizons - the workers of 2040 have already been born - which makes the political system’s systematic inattention to it a particularly striking example of the first-order bias at work.
Immigration is the most obvious policy lever available to aging societies, but it is also among the most politically constrained, for reasons that are themselves partly a product of the institutional trust problems described elsewhere in this essay. The honest assessment is that most developed economies are not currently on a trajectory to manage this challenge well - not because the demographic data is unavailable or the analysis unclear, but because the incentive structures of democratic politics systematically discount long-term costs in favor of short-term benefits. That is precisely the kind of structural misalignment that becomes dramatically harder to correct once its consequences have fully materialized.
Public debt in the advanced economies has reached levels that would have been considered extraordinary - and in most cases politically impossible - a generation ago. The United States carries federal debt approaching 130 percent of GDP, a level last approached during the immediate aftermath of World War II and maintained then only briefly. Japan exceeds 250 percent. Several European economies face structural primary deficits that compound the nominal debt burden with each passing year, even in periods of relative economic stability. The standard response to observations of this kind is that debt levels are sustainable as long as interest rates remain below growth rates - a condition that held for an extended period and provided intellectual cover for a sustained loosening of fiscal discipline across most of the developed world. That condition has changed.
The second- and third-order consequences of this accumulation are less about any single crisis event than about the progressive narrowing of policy optionality. The flexibility that fiscal prudence provides - the ability to respond forcefully to genuine economic emergencies, to fund the investments that long-run competitiveness requires, to absorb demographic costs without either crushing tax increases or brutal benefit reductions - has been gradually and largely quietly consumed. Carmen Reinhart and Kenneth Rogoff documented across eight centuries of financial history the systematic pattern by which societies convince themselves that their circumstances are different from all previous cases, right up to the moment when they demonstrably are not. The relevant question is not whether current fiscal trajectories are sustainable over the long run - by most credible analyses, they are not - but under what circumstances, at what cost, and with what distributional consequences the necessary adjustment will occur. Those questions are not being asked with the seriousness they deserve.
Underlying every challenge described above - and compounding each of them - is something harder to quantify but perhaps more consequential than any of the specific structural pressures: a widespread and in many countries accelerating erosion of institutional trust. Trust in governments has declined across virtually every advanced democracy over the past three decades, but the erosion extends well beyond governments. Universities, media organizations, courts, regulatory bodies, international institutions, and the epistemic authorities - scientists, economists, public health officials - on whom democratic governance depends for the shared factual foundation that makes deliberation possible have all experienced significant declines in public confidence. This matters in ways that are easy to understate.
Institutions are built on legitimacy, and legitimacy is built on trust. When that trust erodes, institutions do not immediately cease to function in a technical sense - laws continue to be passed, rulings continue to be issued, agreements continue to be signed. But they lose the social authority that makes their formal functioning meaningful. A legal system whose impartiality is widely doubted produces compliance only where the threat of enforcement is immediate; a public health system whose credibility has been squandered cannot mobilize collective behavior in a crisis; a free press whose independence is widely questioned cannot perform the epistemic function that democratic self-governance requires of it. The political theorist Jürgen Habermas described this condition as a legitimation crisis: the moment when existing institutions can no longer generate sufficient loyalty to sustain their essential functions. The trajectory toward that condition is visible across most of the developed world. We are not there yet. But the direction of travel is clear, and the compounding nature of institutional erosion - where declining trust produces declining performance, which produces further declining trust - makes early intervention considerably more valuable than late.
What drives this erosion is not a single cause but several reinforcing ones: genuine performance failures by institutions that made promises they could not keep; the democratization of information, which has made institutional failures easier to document and harder to dismiss; the economic incentives of the media environment, which reward outrage and suspicion because outrage and suspicion generate engagement; and the deliberate efforts of political actors who have discovered that institutional delegitimation is an effective tool for accumulating power outside normal channels. The appropriate response is not a defense of institutions as they currently exist, many of which do require serious reform. It is the insistence on distinguishing between the institutions that require reform and the institutional framework itself - between the specific failures that accountability demands we address and the accumulated social capital that a functioning society cannot afford to liquidate.
What makes this historical moment genuinely unusual - what justifies the claim that something more than ordinary cyclical challenge is underway - is not any single one of these pressures. It is their simultaneity and their interactions. Each of the five challenges described above would represent a significant policy problem in isolation. Considered together, they constitute something closer to a stress test of modern institutional capacity, applied across multiple dimensions at once.
The interactions compound the difficulty in ways that linear analysis misses. Artificial intelligence disrupts labor markets at precisely the moment when demographic decline is already reducing the workforce and increasing the demand for productivity growth to sustain living standards with fewer workers. Great-power competition strains the international institutions that would otherwise provide the most natural frameworks for governing a technology like AI - ensuring that its benefits are broadly shared rather than concentrated, and that its risks are managed cooperatively rather than exploited competitively. The debt overhangs that constrain fiscal space do so at precisely the moment when the demographic transition, the technological disruption, and the geopolitical realignment all require active public investment. And the erosion of institutional trust makes it harder to build the political coalitions necessary for the long-horizon reforms that all of these challenges require, because long-horizon reform requires a degree of deferred gratification that low-trust political environments are structurally poor at sustaining.
These are not independent variables. They are a system, and the second- and third-order interactions among them are exactly the kind of consequences that first-order thinking consistently misses. This does not mean that catastrophe is the inevitable or even the most probable outcome. Human ingenuity is real, institutional adaptation is possible, and the historical record includes many examples of societies navigating challenges of comparable difficulty more successfully than pessimists predicted. But navigating them well requires, at minimum, that we understand what we are actually dealing with - which requires asking questions whose full implications we may not be comfortable confronting.
The questions we forget to ask do not disappear. They become the problems we inherit.
If there is a single concern that has emerged most consistently from this year of writing, it is not any specific policy failure or structural trend, though there are many of both worth examining. It is our collective tendency - reinforced by the architecture of modern media, the incentive structures of democratic politics, and the attention economy of digital platforms - to focus on immediate outcomes while systematically neglecting the longer-term consequences that will ultimately determine whether those outcomes represent genuine progress or deferred costs. That tendency is not a character flaw. It is a structural feature of the environment in which public discourse now occurs, which makes it considerably harder to address through appeals to individual virtue alone.
The challenges confronting modern societies are increasingly complex, increasingly interconnected, and increasingly resistant to the kind of jurisdiction-specific, single-issue policy responses that democratic institutions are best designed to produce. They cross national borders, disciplinary boundaries, and the political identities through which most voters understand their interests and obligations. They require thinking beyond the next election, the next quarterly report, or the next news cycle - not because these horizons are unimportant, but because the decisions made within them accumulate into outcomes that operate on entirely different timescales.
That does not mean we must agree on solutions. Reasonable people will continue to disagree about policy choices, and they should. Democratic deliberation depends precisely on the contestation of ideas - on the availability of genuine alternatives and the freedom to advocate for them. What matters is not agreement but the quality of the disagreement: whether it is conducted with a sufficiently broad perspective, a sufficiently long time horizon, and a sufficient willingness to examine consequences beyond those that a particular ideological prior would prefer to acknowledge. The goal is not consensus. It is seriousness - the kind of analytical seriousness that insists on asking not just what happens, but what happens next, and then what happens after that, until the full shape of a decision’s consequences becomes visible enough to reason about honestly.
Over the past year, I have shared my thoughts on economics, public policy, technology, and society. Yet it occurs to me that while many readers know something about me, I know remarkably little about many of the people who read this publication.
One of the unexpected pleasures of writing this Substack has been discovering that thoughtful readers continue to exist in much larger numbers than our public discourse often suggests. Writing is often described as a solitary activity, but publishing, in the fullest sense, is not. Every essay on this publication is the beginning of a conversation, not the end of one. The readers who push back on arguments they find incomplete, who offer perspectives that come from professional or personal experience the author lacks, who ask the questions that had not occurred to him and point toward the evidence that complicates the analysis he thought was settled - these readers are not an audience for ideas that have already been finished. They are participants in a process of thinking that has not. The community this publication has attracted over the past year has shaped it as much as the author has, and that is not a polite thing to say. It is simply accurate.
I did not expect, one year ago, to be writing to over 40,000 people. I did not expect that essays on the political economy of inflation, the governance of artificial intelligence, and the structure of international trade would find readers on six continents - readers in positions of policy responsibility, in academic institutions, in business, and in private life, each bringing their own experience and judgment to questions that resist easy answers. I did not expect that a publication born from intellectual restlessness - from the simple desire to think more carefully about a world that seemed to be moving faster than our frameworks for understanding it - would find a community of readers who shared that restlessness deeply enough to show up, week after week, for essays that make no concession to brevity or simplicity.
For all of that, I am sincerely grateful. One year ago, I began writing in an effort to better understand the world. I am not confident that I completely understand it. But I am more convinced than ever that understanding begins not with answers but with questions - and that the questions we ask, more than any other single factor, determine the future we are capable of imagining. My hope, for the year ahead and for whatever comes after it, is that this publication continues to ask better ones.
