Most underwater cinematographers shooting DSLRs are wasting their time and that of anyone who might want to use their footage for a high end production.
The brutal truth? If your footage is shaky, no production company will touch it. Period.
I’ve seen shooters spend tens of thousands of dollars on camera gear and access to wild dive locations only to shoot unusable footage because they had no idea how to keep the camera steady.
If you are serious about shooting on a professional level, do the following:
Most DSLR or Mirrorless underwater systems using dome ports are very buoyant, turning your camera into a bobbing cork.
While neutral buoyancy might makes senes for a big underwater housing like a Gates or a SubSpace, it does not translate so well in the case of a smaller DSLR type system.
Your DSLR/Mirrorless system must be negatively buoyant—it should sink slowly if you let it go.
This is counterintuitive from a loss perspective, but it helps massively with stability.
Investing in an external monitor for your DSLR/Mirrorless System is a non negotiable
Not only does it enable you to frame your shots with greater intention, it allows you to shoot tighter and to pull focus manually using the focus peaking function built into the monitor.
But here’s the secret nobody talks about: a long 3D-printed hood. Press your mask against that hood extension and you’ve created a third point of contact. This single technique transforms wobbly footage into rock-steady footage, especially in situations where you are swimming fast to. keep up with your subject.
Short, plastic scuba fins create choppy, erratic movement that destroys shot quality.
Carbon blades are not just about swimming faster or diving deeper. They enable smooth, fluid propulsion that does not translate into camera wobble.
Commit to using carbon freediving fins on all your dives and you will never look back. I use them even when diving in a drysuit when I am not filming using a tripod.
Productions like Blue Planet are not looking for “decent” footage, or “Stuff” as film maker Hugh Pearson would call it. They are looking for “A Class” shots that tick a number of cinematic criteria, with stability being a key non negotiable.
I’ve used these exact techniques with a Nikon D800 back in 2013 to shoot sequences for a BBC documentary The camera system cost a fraction of a RED underwater system, but the stability techniques I evolved on that shoot made the footage indistinguishable from what I could have shot on a bigger system.
Your DSLR footage is either stable and potentially usable or it’s nowhere. If you are serious about achieving what only the 1% can, you need to stop behaving like the 99%, take yourself seriously, and invest in your self and your craft.
