As you may have noticed, my new record The Confuser came out on Friday. Wahoo! If you haven’t heard it yet, here it is in ten daily doses, beginning with Track 1 and proceeding from there. It’s a party record for all the family, with a few reflective songs to take the mood elsewhere for a while. Enjoy!
I Am This Thing
A flash of existential bliss that I want to share with the universe, set to a classic English wah-wah pedal pulse. You’re only you once!
My Dead Astronaut
Heroes keep you guessing sometimes. A rockin’ party song for a new dystopia. And a nod to J.G. Ballard
Yesterday’s Rain
…falls on tomorrow’s parade. The sins of the past call the shots for the future. And on the way, you get the flag, the lilac tomb, and the crocodile on skis. It’s all good! More classic Brit-rock, played as only Americans can.
Breathless
Sometimes someone takes your breath away and never gives it back. That lack of oxygen can make you giddy, especially if you’re in a back garden in Los Angeles. Music to capsize to.
Ghost in Sunlight
A ghost in sunlight is as close as you can get to being transparent, invisible, see-through. Sometimes authorities tear up the very rails you ride on. It can make you scream, and make Gillian Welch scream too.
Building From The Ruins
A celebration of collapse and restoration. You can’t have one without the other. Another dystopian boogie, fuelled by the ever-dependable wah-wah pedal.
The Vanishing Kind
Love among the ghosts. This track is a dream, one of my better ones. Tremolos rule!
How To Feel Alright
Set to a beat that’s the latest in the chapter headed Bo Diddley:
Don’t mistake your girlfriend for your Mum. And what’s wrong with your Mum anyway?
Monday For Me
We are fated to go round in circles: or is time really a spiral, a corkscrew even - pushing ever-forward as it grinds through life? Regardless, you get no further than Sunday before it’s Monday again. Almost a country song, for an almost country.
Wasted
An anthem for my generation, and those gone before, and those to come. Flight attendants, please be seated. Written for Dean Martin, who would sing this far better than me.
The Confuser is out now on Tiny Ghost Records, streaming everywhere, and hits retail outlets on August 21.
