This recurring column suggests restaurants so good they are fit for weekend destination dining. Here’s the previous edition: Overstuffed Lobster Rolls, Garlicky Crawfish, and More
The West Village has been something of a bakery desert over the last few years, and residents had to be content with day-old Orwashers from a local meat market, or one of the dodgy baguettes from Gourmet Garage. Now, quite miraculously, a tiny French bakery has opened at 41 Perry Street, selling baguettes, croissants, pain au chocolats, sourdough and brioche loaves, and apple turnovers, among other things, including miniature version of the Viennoiserie at $4, in case you’re in need of a snack while passing by.
The place has been open a month, and already they’re started selling a small collection of sandwiches, alternating smoked salmon on a baguette, a maverick tuna melt using Basque tuna from a picturesque tin, and various hot croques. But my attention was immediately riveted by the jambon beurre ($18), a Parisian classic featuring little else but butter, sliced ham, and a demi-baguette.
