(1964 Indiana State Fair Queen with the Beatles. Colorized by AI)
A couple of weeks ago, at the start of this year’s Indiana State Fair, I posted a new 5 a.m. Story called Smirking at the S’Mork. It was very popular. Readers liked the idea of me borrowing adjectives that are frequently used to describe President Donald Trump, and applying them to disgusting Fairgrounds food, instead.
Now, in the closing days of the 2026 Fair, I’m rerunning a story from two years ago, reflecting on my experiences as a very young reporter covering the Fair in the long-ago 1970s.
WARNING: This one contains some fairly outrageous word play, such as saying the State Fair’s Posture Queen was “no slouch.”
Anyway, I think it’s a fun story, and if you didn’t happen to make it to the Fair this year, you can just read Fair is Fair, instead.
As usual, I’m hoping Throwback Thursday will get you in the mood to become a paying subscriber to 5 a.m. Stories. It’s only $5 a month, the money goes to wonderful charities, and I don’t have to think I’m writing this stuff for free.
