I’ve already discussed our first and second anthologies of short stories, and how they led to our first novel. The road to our second novel was a bit more straightforward. My wife Morgon and I were in a race to complete our own first novels, and I finished first.
I think the key factor in why I finished first turned out to be that I was the one going to most of the conventions at that time and trying to sell the books we had. It was genuinely a bit embarrassing to both only have a very few books as a “publishing company” and for none of them to be my own. That motivated me to get to work on my novel.
It was a long time coming. I’d been working on it since 2012 - well before we’d launched Silver Empire. In the sprint of 2017, I finally finished the first draft. The second and third drafts came surprisingly fast, and by that summer I had what would prove to be essentially the final draft (minus some final copy editing) in hand.
