Governor Kathy Hochul changed society again in New York State on March 19, 2024. Women and girls can ask any pharmacist on duty at any participating pharmacy for hormonal contraceptives no Prescription needed.
Women mothers girls daughters are the glue of the family; responsible for themselves and for others.
This change from a medical practice procedure, from needing to go to a doctor to ask for a prescription for birth control, to more easily accessible pharmacy practice setting, pharmacist based care, empowers women to care for themselves and their familes.
Hormonal contraceptives are now available by asking the pharmacist on duty at any participating pharmacy.
A “standing order” has been issued by NYS New York State Dept of Health Commissioner Dr. James McDonald at College Parkside Pharmacy in Albany authorizing NYS registered pharmacists to dispense three types of hormonal contraception medications without a prescription.
The “standing order” names three types of self-administered hormonal contraceptives that are approved by the federal FDA Food and Drug Administration to prevent pregnancy:
* Oral hormonal pills
* Hormonal vaginal ring
* Hormonal contraceptive topical patches
Pharmacists can dispense up to 12 months of self-administered hormonal contraception of the consumer/individual's preference and bill their insurance.
