Lighting 101: Our Guide to Fixture Size & Scale

Pendants are more than a source of task lighting; they help define the kitchen’s visual center. Their placement should feel connected to the island while maintaining open sightlines and a comfortable sense of scale.

When possible, allow at least 30 inches between the widest points of each fixture, position each pendant 8–10 inches in from the island counter edge to create rhythm, balanced spacing, and even light distribution, and hang each fixture so the bottom of the pendant is 30–36 inches above the countertop.

A dining fixture should feel anchored to the table beneath it, creating a focal point without competing with the surrounding architecture. Scale is what allows the lighting to feel integrated rather than simply placed in the room.

As a general guideline, hang the fixture 30–36 inches above the tabletop and choose a size that complements the width of the table. For both comfort and safety, the edge of the fixture should extend no closer than 6 inches from the edge of the tabletop, helping prevent guests from bumping their heads when sitting down or standing up.

The vanity is where lighting becomes both functional and personal. Properly placed sconces provide even illumination across the face while adding depth and architectural character to the bathroom.

Whenever possible, position sconces on either side of the mirror and mount them 60–65 inches from the floor to the center of the backplate. Final placement should respond to the mirror size, vanity height, and proportions of the room

A beautiful light fixture can anchor a living room, but only if it’s hung at the right height. As a general rule, maintain at least 7 feet of clearance from the finished floor so the fixture doesn’t interrupt sightlines or become an obstacle for anyone walking beneath it. The goal is for the light to make a statement, not get in the way.

Good bedside lighting considers the way the space is actually used. A sconce frees up the nightstand, provides focused reading light, and places illumination exactly where it is needed.

For everyday ease, position the switch within reach from a seated position in bed. A typical placement is 55–60 inches from the floor to the top of the sconce, adjusted for the bed height, fixture style, and scale of the room.

Picture lights allow artwork to become part of the room’s overall lighting composition. Rather than drawing attention to the fixture itself, the goal is to softly illuminate the piece and enhance its details.

Choose a shade width approximately half the width of the artwork or frame below. Position the light at roughly a 30-degree angle toward the artwork to create even illumination while minimizing glare and shadows.

Exterior lighting establishes the first impression of a home. Thoughtful scale and placement create a sense of arrival while reinforcing the architecture of the entry.

For wall-mounted fixtures beside a door, position sconces at approximately 60–65 inches from the ground. To maintain proper proportion, choose fixtures that measure at least one-quarter the height of the door.
