Extraordinary Picture Books: The Red Book series

by Barbara Lehman

In this post, we cover Barbara Lehman’s picture books. Her illustrations have several themes familiar to quality literature. Children are lonely, looking for someone to play with. In all of her books, children seek out and find friendship. Beautiful outcomes.

Consider using a magnifying glass to find clues in these images.

The second theme is that we are often following maps in Lehman’s books. The children are on an adventure that leads them to each other. The journeys they take are often difficult and sometimes risky. We quickly turn the pages, discovering what will happen next. For us, this was a perfect introduction to maps and using maps to find our way.

Consider looking at maps from your local amusement parks or zoos. Sprinkle in a few other fiction and non-fiction books to extend the learning about maps.
