1️⃣ This will be short and simple.

New York is hitting an American League-worst .230. There are certainly some metrics that would argue that the Yankees are not the worst, but batting average is as simple as it gets, and the Yankees are 15th out of 15 teams. They’ve been passed in run differential by the Red Sox.

Jazz Chisholm Jr. needs to be benched. If the Yankees want to keep a lefty bat in the lineup, how about moving Luis García Jr. to second base and letting Paul Goldschmidt and Ben Rice platoon between first base and designated hitter?

At this point, determining a lineup based on matchups isn’t faring well.

Ali Sánchez is the team’s leading hitter (.271), albeit with just 59 at-bats. George Lombard Jr. is next at .265 (34 at-bats). Skip over Cody Bellinger (.259) and Giancarlo Stanton (.256) for injured list reasons, and Ben Rice is next at .251 — and dropping fast.

It’s hard to pin the hitting woes of the past week on Trent Grisham and Austin Wells, as they have been the two most productive hitters.

Chisholm, for all his flash and flair, is fizzling. Strikeout after strikeout — a team-leading 140, by the way — his body language screams “checked out.” Yes, it’s frustrating for him. Yes, he’s a wear-his-emotions-on-his-sleeve kinda guy. But he could also provide a spark — and he’s not.

When a team relies on home runs for its run production, it’s hard to sit the team’s second-leading home run hitter — yes, Grisham has as many as Aaron Judge (17) — but it’s time.

At this point, there’s no guarantee that getting Cody Bellinger and Giancarlo Stanton back is going to cure the offensive woes. There’s also no guarantee that someone else won’t hit the injured list. It’s baseball. Or as they like to say now in the Bronx, “Schlitt happens.”

The Yankees will make the playoffs. That’s almost certain now because of the pitching. But with each passing week of games in which New York scratches out one, two or three runs like it’s already the postseason, it’s becoming evident this is just the Yankees’ offensive identity.
