1️⃣ As expected after New York demoted Anthony Volpe to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and called up prospect George Lombard Jr. to play shortstop, Volpe’s transition to second base is underway.

Volpe has not played second base since 2021 with High-A Hudson Valley. He played two games (18 innings) that season, totaling eight chances with two putouts, four assists and two errors. Critics will point to those two errors and say, “See, he can’t even play second base.”

Still, Volpe’s pinstripe days are likely not over.

Barring the unforeseen, Lombard has dazzled enough in a small sample size to project as the 2027 Opening Day starting shortstop. Don’t expect Jazz Chisholm Jr., who struggled during his free-agency season, to be his middle infield partner. Re-signing him this offseason seems unlikely given in-house options like Volpe, José Caballero and newly acquired Luis García Jr., who has played 508 career games at second base. The Yankees could also pursue someone like Luis Arráez, making second base a low priority.

Heading into the offseason, New York’s shopping list resembles its trade deadline priorities: a right-handed-hitting catcher, bullpen depth and perhaps a third baseman with more offensive production than Ryan McMahon.

In two starts at second for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, Volpe has played error-free defense with three putouts, three assists and a double play. He will remain at the position and could be recalled when MLB rosters expand for the stretch run, allowing the Yankees to test a Lombard-Volpe middle infield.

So before fans celebrate Volpe’s departure too much, keep in mind his days in pinstripes may not be over.

2️⃣ Kervin Castro’s recent time in New York was brief. Prior to the Yankees’ 4-1 win over Seattle Tuesday, Castro was placed on the 15-day injured list (retroactive to Aug. 10) with right elbow neuritis.

Called up from Triple-A was right-hander Bradley Hanner, 27. Hanner’s first appearance will be his major league debut. In 51.1 innings pitched, Hanner has a 2.10 ERA and has struck out 29% of the batters he has faced this season.
