Nick and I have spent nearly a decade in New York. I’ve lived in Chelsea, Alphabet City, Mt Eden in The Bronx, SoHo, and Chinatown — I worked retail for years in Williamsburg, but never lived in Brooklyn. In fact, Nick and I were notorious Bushwick haters until this summer, when a month long sublease in our budget forced us to reconsider. and thank god — as it turns out, Bushwick is awesome. it’s East Williamsburg that sucks :)
I’ve gotten manymanymany messages asking me to share new york favorites, but when it comes to this city, my favorite places are a little… dated? sentimental? like, I’ve been going to the same Mexican restaurant for 10 years, and yes it’s Beloved by me but if you only have a weekend in new york there’s absolutely no reason you should be there (it’s Fonda). And yes sometimes I want to dine at the Olive Garden in Times Square (i resist), or get a $25 mac and cheese at The Smith. My favorite bagel is a toasted everything with strawberry cream cheese from Brooklyn Bagels, because the lady on line in front of me in 2014 ordered that and it sounded good so I did too and now 12 years later here we are. And after yapping about cooool restaurants in cities all over the world, being back in new york, a city that I know intimately, reminds me that locals don’t give a fuck what is cool. in fact there is no “cool” - there is new, there is known, and there is good. And what makes a place a mustttttt go is subjective and often more about the company than the food itself. so alas, I do not have a definitive IT list for New York. but I have been eating well, and I’ll tell you about it below :)
Everything I Loved in New York in July
I am a savory pastry gorl and the kimchi scone from Loveless Coffees is my new favorite thing. i would not be surprised if they use boxed Red Lobster biscuit mix for the base, but that only endears me to it more. so good. when I wasn’t getting that, i went to our local bodega (shout out mister avocado) for a bacon egg and cheese CON hashbrown, on an everything bagel. dunked in red hot. my god.
