A routine treasure hunt at a Hillsboro Goodwill store in January has turned into a find of a lifetime for 19-year-old Quinn Brown.
The Portland resident said he discovered a Los Angeles Lakers warm-up jacket that has since been authenticated as one worn by NBA legend Wilt Chamberlain.
Brown said he spotted the gold-and-purple Lakers jacket in someone else’s hands. But when that person put it down, he quickly picked it up.
It rang up at $3.07. Sotheby’s, which somehow spotted it on Instagram, later photo-matched it to a jersey worn by Wilt Chamberlain in his final NBA season in the early 1970s. It is now expected to sell for between $150,000 and $250,000.
The thrift stores around me are terrible. Empty pickle jars go for more than I pay for a full one at Walmart. Now I wonder if those JNCO jeans I put back on the rack used to belong to Fred Durst and I could have been rich.
