John Graves

"Another Revolutionary Soldier Gone! Died at his residence in Washington, Wilkes County, Georgia, on the 24th ult., in his 77th year, Colonel John Graves. He was born in Culpepper County, Virginia, and entered the Army in 1776 as a Lieutenant in the 8th Virginia Regiment. At the close of the war, he was a Major. He was in the battles of Brandywine, Germantown, Monmouth, and the York siege. When General Greene Crossed the Yadkin River, he was in charge of 200 men to protect the passage of the troops; they had an engagement with Cornwallis in doing so but succeeded in protecting the troops and themselves, crossing the Yadkin River with a loss of only three killed and five wounded. He moved to Georgia in 1784. He commanded a regiment against the Creeks in 1786. The Treaty of Shoulderbone followed, to which he was a witness. In the last election, he was elected to the Legislature as a Presidential Electorate.”
