I’ve put together a small fashion and beauty shopping edit in honor of Latinx Heritage Month,1 which you can explore here.2 For shopping IRL, if you’re in NYC, I always recommend Tumbao for an incredible curation of Latinx brands (including many that are featured in this month’s edit). I also noticed Banzo will be hosting a pop-up in the Lower East Side later this week.
Fittingly, one of my favorite shows of NYFW so far is Campillo, a Mexico City based fashion brand focusing on ethically and sustainably produced clothing that “redefines masculinity by integrating historical and contemporary elements, promoting an inclusive and diverse vision of what it means to be a man.”
Last year, founder Patricio Campillo became the first ever Mexican designer to be nominated as an LVMH Prize semi-finalist. I feel very lucky to have discovered the brand on a trip to CDMX back in 2023, when I purchased the hand-dyed silk shirt I’m wearing in the photo below (somewhat similar to this plain version).
In other Latinx-focused fashion news, a recent Willy Chavarría x Adidas collaboration over the summer became the topic of contention. This opened up a fascinating discourse — cultural appropriation debates are much more common and clear-cut in cases of a white American or European designer appropriating ideas and aesthetics from another culture with which they have no association (see: Prada).
I don’t think we’ve seen as much discussion of the complexities involved when a diasporic designer draws inspiration from their cultural motherland. So I was really appreciative of Talía Cu’s curation of perspectives on this nuanced topic shared by Latinx writers on Substack, and I particularly enjoyed these:
