What If Your Next Chapter Is Built From Everything You Already Know?

One of the myths about retirement is that we are supposed to leave our working lives behind.

But why would we?

We may leave a job, sell a business, step away from a profession, or decide that we simply don’t want to work the way we once did. But we don’t suddenly lose the decades of experience, relationships, insights, mistakes, successes, and wisdom we’ve accumulated along the way.

The more interesting question might be:

What could all of that become next?

That’s why I’m looking forward to my conversation with Lynn Lavender at our next Rethink Retirement Webinar on Wednesday, August 19 at noon EDT.

Lynn spent nearly two decades in enterprise sales, technology, financial services, and independent distribution. During those years, she began noticing something that bothered her.

Professional services depend enormously on trust. Yet the way professionals present themselves digitally is often cold, static, and impersonal. The very people whose success depends upon relationships weren’t showing potential clients who they really were.

Lynn saw a gap.

And instead of simply observing it, she built something to fill it.

She founded Lavender Landings, drawing upon everything she had learned about sales, trust, relationships, communication, and how people decide whom they want to work with.

I find her story fascinating because it illustrates something we’re discovering again and again as we rethink retirement:

Your next chapter doesn’t have to be a rejection of your previous one. It can be a reinvention of it.

You don’t necessarily have to start over.

You can start from experience.

During our conversation, Lynn and I will explore what it means to reinvent yourself after a long career. We’ll talk about staying visible and relevant, recognizing opportunities that others don’t see, and turning decades of accumulated knowledge into something new.

And I want to ask her something else:

What did she have to let go of before she could see what was possible?

Because that may be one of the hardest parts of any transition. We become very good at being who we have been. The challenge is imagining who we might become next.
