This week I had the honor of stepping onto the Freedom Stage to celebrate America’s 250th anniversary. Instead of the usual topics, I chose to tackle something that could determine whether we’re still here celebrating our 500th: the shocking vulnerability of our electric grid.
I was joined by two warriors I trust with my life: Tommy Waller—Force Recon Commander and President of the Center for Security Policy—and Jonathan Hollerman—Air Force SERE Specialist, grid expert, and bestselling author. We laid it out plain and unfiltered.
Our grid is completely vulnerable. A handful of coordinated strikes at just 9–12 critical locations could cause a national blackout. In a grid-down scenario, experts warn that up to 90% of Americans could perish within one year from lack of food, water, medical care, and basic services. We’re talking Mad Max conditions, not some distant possibility.
We broke down the four major threats:
Physical attacks on key infrastructure
Cyber warfare
EMP (nuclear or solar)
Supply chain infiltration—including Chinese transformers already in our grid that may contain backdoors
The good news? This isn’t inevitable. It’s a solvable problem, and we have leaders right now who are willing to act.
