Not everything you avoid is procrastination.

Most of us throw every version of “not doing the thing” into one big pile and call it Procrastination. Then we try to fix it with more willpower, more discipline, more forcing ourselves across the finish line.

But if you’ve ever tried that, you know it doesn’t always work. Even if it does, it doesn’t last. And when it eventually backfires, we think we are broken, lazy, unproductive, hopeless, lack willpower and what not.

But before you decide you are never going to beat procrastination… Let’s actually figure out what’s going on. There are four very different reasons you might not be doing the thing and it is not always ‘Procrastination.’

This is the most misunderstood one.

You know that task that’s been sitting on your list forever? You keep telling yourself you’ll do it later. By the end of the day, after everything else is done, you realize you just… don’t have the energy for it.

And immediately your mind goes: What is wrong with me? Why can’t I just do this?

Nothing is wrong with you. You’re exhausted.

Most of us don’t account for how mentally, emotionally, or physically drained we actually are. We look at the task and think it’s so simple, we should be able to do this. But your system has no fuel left. Forcing yourself in this state doesn’t make you productive, it makes the task feel ten times heavier. Something you could finish in twenty minutes takes two hours. And you end up more depleted than before.

When I was writing my first book, there was a full month where everything else went on hold. Not coz I was avoiding it, but coz all my energy was going into writing. I didn’t guilt-trip myself for it. That was my focus, and it was okay for everything else to wait. Or when at the end of a long day at the office, I had no physical or emotional energy to deal with anyone or anything, let alone the workout I kept trying to force myself into.

So before you call it procrastination, ask yourself honestly: do I actually have the energy for this today?

What actually helps here: Rest. A real break. Not the kind where you’re mentally still running through everything you should be doing. Let your system recharge. Coz when the energy comes back, the task that once felt impossible often gets done in minutes. Taking a break and accepting that something else needs your energy right now isn’t failure. It’s the smartest way to work with yourself and in a way, showing yourself that you care.

This is the classic version of procrastination..

You have the time. You have the energy. Nothing major is happening. The task is honestly simple. And yet… you’re not doing it. Your mind starts coming up with the most reasonable, logical, responsible-sounding excuses - Let me just do this one thing first. I’ll start in ten minutes. Maybe tomorrow will be better. I’m not in the right headspace.

All of it sounds so sane. But this is resistance. Not coz the task is hard, but coz something inside you is trying to avoid the discomfort of starting.

Think about the simple things. Going for a walk. Drinking more water. Writing that one email. Things that take minutes. Things you know are good for you. Things you actually want to get done. But your mind quietly pulls you away from them every time.

This is where most folks beat themselves up. They think they lack discipline or willpower. But that’s not what’s happening. Your mind has learned a pattern and it keeps running that loop automatically. Every time you decide you’ll do something and then talk yourself out of it, that pattern gets stronger. Over time it chips away at your self-trust, and you start wondering if you are not the kind of person who does the hard things.

What actually helps here: Interrupting the pattern, not punishing yourself for having it. The same brain that learned avoidance can learn movement - that’s literally what neuroplasticity means. When you catch the negotiating voice and take even the smallest step forward anyway, you begin rewiring that loop. Not through force or shame but by the repetition of a different response. Tools and practices that help you break the pattern are worth learning here - habits, pattern-interrupts, anything that helps you move before the mind talks you out of it.

This one is the most frustrating and the most layered.

You’re not tired. You’re not negotiating. You genuinely want to get it done. You’re motivated, available, ready and yet your system just freezes. This isn’t procrastination in the usual sense. This is resistance from something deeper.

Things like:

  • Perfectionism: you’re trying to get it “right,” so starting feels risky

  • Trying to do everything at once: when the task feels too big, your system freezes

  • Identity mismatch: the version of you who does this consistently still feels unfamiliar

  • Misaligned or conditioned goals: you’re chasing something that sounds right on paper but doesn’t actually resonate

  • Fear of doing it wrong: so you keep preparing instead of beginning

  • Fear of what happens if it works: success brings visibility, change, or responsibility your system isn’t ready for

  • Avoiding an uncomfortable emotion: sometimes you’re not avoiding the task at all, you’re avoiding the feeling attached to it

When I was writing the core section of my book, I got completely stuck. Not from lack of energy. Not from lack of desire coz I was in the zone. But I couldn’t move forward. I eventually realized that I was battling Perfectionism. Trying to cover everything. Trying to make every line exactly right. Trying to do in one chapter what needed to unfold across the whole book. It was never about the writing. It was about the pressure I’d created in my mind. The minute I worked through those blocks, the flow came back.

What actually helps here: The solution isn’t more discipline or doubling down. It’s working through what’s underneath so your energy and action can finally align. This is the moment for inner work like looking at the patterns, beliefs, and emotional load that are stopping you from moving even when everything else is in place. Once you clear the block, the energy you already have finally gets to move & it feels effortless!

Nobody talks about this one. But everyone experiences it.

You have energy. You have desire. You’re not blocked. You’re ready to go and still, something quietly says not yet. This is a timing issue.

I experienced this for years with my health. I kept trying to force physical action aka routines, movement, discipline & what not. Logically it made sense. I felt aligned.. No blocks whatsoever. But every time I tried to move, it fell flat & didn’t take. Even things I loved just didn’t land.

What I didn’t realize was that I was in the middle of deep emotional healing. My system was still recalibrating. That chapter hadn’t arrived yet.

Same with the book. I had the idea. I had the desire. I felt aligned. And still year after year, it didn’t happen. And then one day, it was time. And the whole thing wrote itself.

I don’t look back at those years and call them failure. That phase was necessary. The inner work, the integration… all of it made the action land in a way it never could have before.

Sometimes you’re not meant to take the action yet. Sometimes the version of you who can actually do the thing is still forming.

How do you know it’s timing and not avoidance? You’re not exhausted. You’re not negotiating. You’re not held back by inner blocks. You’re genuinely aligned but something still says not yet.

What actually helps here: Let it be. Trust that when it’s meant for you, it always comes back and when it does, you won’t hesitate. You’ll just move. That said, even when the timing is finally right, you might still hit Type 2, aka the negotiating voice, the hesitation. That’s normal. Your work is making sure that when the right time arrives, you know how to move through that resistance instead of getting stuck in it again.

For everything on your to-do list right now: is it no energy? Mental negotiation? Inner blocks? Or just not the right time?

Coz the moment you know which one you’re dealing with, everything changes. You can stop fighting yourself. You can stop making your stuckness mean something it doesn’t. And instead, you work with yourself.

That’s the whole point. Not more productivity. Not becoming a machine that does everything on time.

But building a different relationship with ‘difficulty.’ A different relationship with ‘resistance.’ One that doesn’t require an inner war every time you want to do something that matters.
