Rangeland myths: 'Carbon is carbon'

During 2026, the REPAiR Project is hosting a series of activities and events to explore ‘rangeland myths’ in global perspective. This initiative is part of our engagement with the UN International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists (IYRP 2026).

There is a powerful myth at the heart of global carbon markets: the deceptively simple idea that ‘carbon is carbon’. Carbon is increasingly viewed in abstract terms. Amber Huff explains how the myth has evolved, and what questions it raises for climate finance and action on the ground.
