The Secret to Attracting Dream Clients? Be More You.

There was a time I believed I had to show up online a certain way to be successful.

You know the look: perfectly curated captions, a highlight reel of wins, and never a hair out of place.

But let me tell you a secret: I was exhausted.

Every time I sat down to write a caption, blog post, or send an email, I found myself wondering, “What do people want to hear?” instead of asking, “What do I actually want to say?”

Shifting from always performing to simply showing up didn’t just change my business, it changed me.

When I finally stopped hiding behind what I thought people wanted to see, I started attracting clients who actually wanted me. The kind of clients who trusted my work, valued my perspective, and stuck with me year after year.

Me & and my son, Lake. :)

Here’s the thing: trust is the #1 driver in sales psychology right now.

People aren’t buying perfection. They’re not even buying price tags.

They’re buying connection.
They’re buying clarity.
They’re buying you.

Let’s break it down:

  • Authenticity builds trust. The more real you are, the easier it is for people to believe in you.

  • Clarity reduces stress. When your words and actions match, clients feel safe choosing you.

  • Trust kills indecision. People don’t sit on the fence when they believe in who they’re hiring.

When I started showing up online as my true self — awkward quirks, Midwest-isms and all — I created emotional safety for my clients. And that emotional safety? That’s what leads to referrals, loyalty, and a brand that grows with you.

You don’t have to overshare or spill your deepest secrets online. But you do need to be consistent and true to your voice. Here’s how to start:

1. Speak Like You Talk
Read your captions and emails out loud before you hit post or send. If it doesn’t sound like how you’d say it to a friend over coffee… rewrite it.

2. Share the Behind-the-Scenes
Not just the glossy final photo, but the messy, funny, “you had to be there” moments. Your people want to see you, not just your work.

3. Stop Chasing Trends That Don’t Fit
If trending audio or viral tips don’t align with your vibe — skip them. You’re not a cookie-cutter creator. You’re a full human with a soulful business.

4. Use Your Emails to Go Deeper
Instagram is for glimpses. Email is for connection. Treat the inbox like a letter to a friend, not a sales pitch.

5. Don’t Be Afraid to Repel
If your honest content turns someone away, well that’s GOOD. That made space for someone who is your person. You’re not for everyone, and that’s the whole point!!

You know what happens when people trust you?

You don’t have to convince them.
You don’t have to run constant sales.
You don’t have to justify your pricing.
You don’t have to pretend.

Instead… your inbox fills with, “I don’t know what it is, but I just feel like you’re the right fit.”

And those clients are the ones that stay, are happy to refer you!!

If you’re a photographer who’s been trying to sound like everyone else… or you’ve been discounting your services to get noticed… this is your sign.
