On Laplanche, Queer Theory, Transpersonal & Self Psychology

SO excited to see you all for the continuation of An Introduction to Psychoanalysis THIS Saturday, August 15th!

In the previous class, we focused on the work of Jacques Lacan. In this class, we’ll be looking at the work of Jean Laplanche and the ways in which his ideas lend themself well to queer theory. After reviewing the queerness of psychoanalysis, we’ll turn to the Heinz Kohut and Self Psychology, before venturing into Transpersonal Psychology a la Abraham Maslow and Stanislav Grof. Finally, the class will conclude with a look at Israel Regardie, an interesting figure at the crossroads of 20th-century psychoanalysis and occultism.

We will be meeting online for 2 hours beginning at 12PM NYC (9AM Vancouver/ 5PM London/ 18:00 Stockholm/ 19:00 Beirut) on Saturday, August 15th. (ZOOM LINK BELOW PAYWALL).

This is our second to last class in this course! Our final class will be on Saturday, September 12th with focus on Frantz Fanon and liberation psychology. We’ll also look at Thomas Szasz, R.D. Laing and the anti-psychiatry movement, as well as Patricia Gherovici’s The Puerto Rican Syndrome.

That will set us up nicely for what we’re diving into next: a close reading of From the Clinic to the Streets: Psychoanalysis for Revolutionary Futures (2026) by Dr. Lara Sheehi. In fact, just this weekend I outlined the schedule for the next year. Will be posting about it soon, stay tuned!
