Students of the course write critical reviews on major academic books in religious studies. These books were selected because they feature most recent scholarship on religion (all have been published in the last ten years) and include discussions on the category of religion and what it means in different contexts and for different actors. As part of this course, students conduct collective research projects on a controversy related to the category of “religion.” Working in groups, they identify the crux of the controversy, the actors who took part in it, and reflect on what this controversy reveals about the definitional struggles surrounding the notion of religion.
