England lost. I am, to use the technical term, gutted. There is something uniquely English about football grief. We collect it like heirlooms: the Hand of God, Gazza’s tears, Beckham’s sending off, penalties, penalties, more penalties. As a nation we are connoisseurs of disappointment.
For me at least, this one felt different. For reasons I now struggle to explain, I was totally convinced we would beat Argentina. I even put $9.35 on England winning 4–0, with goals from Kane and Bellingham. The bookmaker generously offered me the chance to turn that into $406.50.
As my 15 daughter told me after, ‘Dad that was money well wasted!’
