I’ve held off on starting this Substack for too long. I want my first post to be perfect. To somehow tell you everything you need to know about this newsletter, but not too much. Long enough to seem legit, but brief enough for busy people.
I’ve been reading other people’s Substacks to learn what works. Unfortunately, this has led to real self-doubt. The more I read, the more I lose my own sense of rhythm and writing.
Isn’t that how it works? We know we need or want to do something, that life will be better once we begin. But the need to get it right keeps us from getting started.
You’re getting this Substack because you found me somewhere and decided you wanted to connect. Connections like this are not perfect; they’re human. Maybe you signed up for my website newsletter, or found me through my books or on this platform. We might know each other, or have friends in common. However you got here, now I’m in your inbox or scrolling on your screen.
I take this position seriously. Why? We are chronically, constantly short on time and attention. Once it’s given, it’s gone. If I’m going to slide this Substack into your view, I want to make it matter. I hope to help you and any kid you care for.
Moving forward, I’ll be sending reflections on how to rehuman in real life. This will be about you and the kids you’re raising or working with. I’ll share science, stories, and realistic strategies. These reflections will be short enough to read on the go, in the car, before bed, or even in the bathroom.
You’re probably rehumaning already, but might lack the language to describe what you’re doing. I hear this a lot. It’s mostly some version of “I don’t want to live like this,” or “We’re not made to live like this,” or ”This cannot be my kids’ lives.” People regularly tell me about the life shifts they’re making or thinking about—from the routine to radical.
Let’s not practice rehumaning alone. Stick around and invite some friends. We thrive better together. Rehumaning doesn’t demand perfection, just practice. Our kids are worth it, and so are we.
