Petrolia made a coaching change over the offseason, but Derek Winn’s promotion to replace his friend Brad Blassingame shouldn’t be viewed as a drastic change.
The Pirates will still run their wing-T offense that enabled running backs Brodie Jackson (1,693 yards, 22 TDs) and Kason Gee (1,503 yards, 18 TDs) to have career junior seasons.
Those backfield mates highlight a team that returns six offensive and five defensive starters. Cody Cox also returns at quarterback, but Petrolia did lose four starting offensive linemen and will be breaking in a new 3-4 defense under coordinator Josh Shipman, who spent the past seven seasons as Trenton’s head coach.
Petrolia won eight straight games last season and played for a district title, but losses to Windthorst and Quanah (who the Pirates had already beaten by 36 points) to close the year put a damper on 2026.
Winn is ready to see if the Pirates can get over the bi-district hump, answering questions about Petrolia’s philosophy changes, strengths and what has impressive him the most after a week of practice.
