What’s Happening: The Industry School has officially opened its purpose-built campus on Bloomfield Street, Cleveland, bringing senior education, vocational training and workplace experience together under one roof.

Why It Matters: The larger campus gives more Redlands teenagers access to the school’s learn and earn model, allowing students to gain qualifications and practical experience while completing their senior education.

By The Numbers:

The campus can accommodate up to 320 students as enrolment demand grows.
Facilities include five general learning areas, three flexible learning spaces and a STEM laboratory.
Construction took 18 months, with students beginning classes during Term 3 in July.

Local Impact: The school will work with Redlands employers across construction, health care, hospitality, marine services and other growing industries. Its central Cleveland location also places students close to public transport and local businesses.

Built for the Job: Three flexible learning neighbourhoods, a media room, outdoor spaces and a street-level hall support different teaching styles and closer contact with employers. A rooftop solar array and energy-efficient design also reduce the building’s operating impact.

What The People Say:

“It will provide more young people with access to an engaging, industry-connected education that combines academic achievement with real employment opportunities,” Principal Kate Mellor said.

“The Industry School helps to equip young Queenslanders with the skills and experience they’ll need for future careers, while strengthening the connections between education, training and industry,” Education and Arts Minister John-Paul Langbroek said.

What’s Happening: Redland City Council has removed invasive weeds and planted native trees at two Sheldon reserves to improve food, shelter and movement routes for local koalas.

The work covers Ford Road Conservation Area and Wallaby Creek Bushland Refuge, where dense lantana had prevented native saplings from becoming established.

Why It Matters: Koalas rely on connected bushland to move safely between feeding and resting areas. Restoring native vegetation helps rebuild the forest canopy while reducing gaps between important habitat sites.

By The Numbers:

500 young eucalyptus trees were planted during the second stage of work at Wallaby Creek Bushland Refuge.
Three-metre-high lantana was removed from parts of the rehabilitation area.
Two Sheldon reserves are being restored, with both listed as Areas of Regional Koala Significance.

Local Impact: Healthier bushland can give Sheldon koalas safer access to food and shelter as surrounding urban areas continue to grow. Visitors can help by remaining on designated tracks, keeping dogs leashed and avoiding restricted areas.

Room to Grow: Council and Healthy Land & Water completed the work through the Queensland Government-funded SEQ Restore & Reconnect: Koala Habitat program. Continued weed control, monitoring and fire management will be needed as the new trees mature.

“The partnership is a positive step forward in efforts to restore important koala habitat on Redlands Coast, but ongoing funding and maintenance will be required to completely restore these areas over time,” Acting Mayor Julie Talty said.

“Members of the community can support this work by respecting restricted areas, staying on designated tracks, keeping dogs on a leash, and allowing regenerating areas to recover naturally,” Division 9 Councillor Jason Colley said.
