There are a dizzying number of what-ifs for this primary, when you look back on more than a year of campaigning in the Democratic primary. But the pivot point that I keep coming back to is this one.

That weekend, I had spent a few days up north, staring at a lake instead of a screen after finalizing the deal to bring The Recombobulation Area back to being independent. I returned from a long drive home on Sunday night, and while catching up on the emails I might have missed, one from the Rodriguez campaign hit my inbox.

It’s been a full sprint every single day since then in what’s been the most discombobulating primary imaginable.

I had heard from several people that, before that release was sent, a number of purple-district state legislators were getting ready to endorse Rodriguez that week. Union support was beginning to come her way, she had won the straw poll at the state party convention, and she was starting to see some separation between her and the other candidates in the field. It seemed like things were lining up for the lieutenant governor to become a real contender in the race.

Of course, just at that moment is when things fell apart — in spectacular fashion. Because once the campaign finance crisis hit, and the political planet began to spin off its axis, David Crowley got back into the race, and the rest is (very recent) history.

But the full story of Wisconsin’s discombobulating Democratic primary cannot be told without the key turning point — the campaign finance crisis that derailed the Rodriguez campaign, allowing Crowley a path back into the race.
