Recent advances in AI coding tools have made it possible to generate code, debug applications, write tests, and automate some development tasks. At the same time, there are reports of software companies reducing development teams or changing the responsibilities of developers.
I am trying to understand how this affects software development as a long-term career rather than whether AI will completely “replace programmers.”
From a software engineering perspective, which parts of a developer's work are most likely to be automated, and which skills are becoming more important as AI-assisted development becomes more common?
For example, should developers focus more on system design, architecture, testing, code review, requirements analysis, security, and integrating AI-generated code rather than primarily learning how to write code?
I am specifically interested in how the software engineering role itself is changing, rather than predictions about whether AI will eliminate software development jobs entirely.
