I just got a Commodore 64 Ultimate from the original retailer. There is a No Joystick Read Me!.txt file in the Games directory of the disk that came with it. There is a No Joystick Read Me!.txt file in the Games directory of the disk that came with it. It says that on the C64 Ultimate we can enable emulating Joysticks via WASM keys via the Joysticks & Controllers menu.

However, when I navigate to this menu the Joystick Input option is grayed out and locked to Normal. I can change other options in the settings interface, just not this one — even though the above .txt file expressly states that this is a supported C64 Ultimate feature.

So, in any case: At the moment none of the games are playable, because as far as I can tell there is nothing set up to provide them the required input. It seems like this is not an intended behaviour, because there is also nothing in the printed user manual that suggests this should be happening?

Does anyone know what's going on here? Is it a known bug? A feature that was never implemented? I can't seem to find information for this specific issue.

System info:

I ordered the device from commodore.net in the UK, and the box and device firmware advertise themselves as the C64 Ultimate FPGA emulated version. To all appearances it seems genuine, although I don't know how I'd prove it.

It's firmware reports itself as version 1.1.0 build 2026-03-16 18:30 id 94d1b3adb9cb, with C64 FPGA version V1.49. I only unboxed it a few hours ago and haven't had time to get the configuration into a weird state that could cause this, so I'm not sure what's happening.

Edit 2

After attempting to run various random programs on the USB key that came with it (specifically SID Tribute.d64 --- though the actual program that changed it may not be this), I noticed the joystick settings changed themselves to WASM Port 1. Evidently these can be changed. This setting, however, remains grayed out to the user so I cannot e.g. set it to WASM port 2 (although most other settings seem to let me change them).
