I have been learning more about PlayStation 2 emulation and noticed that many PS2 emulators still require a BIOS file to achieve accurate emulation.
From a technical perspective, what role does the BIOS play in the PS2 boot process, and why can't an emulator simply replace it entirely with its own code?
I'm also interested in the historical side of this. Were there attempts to create open-source replacements for the PS2 BIOS, and if so, how successful were they?
While researching the topic, I came across several PS2-related resources, which made me curious about the technical importance of the BIOS itself rather than where to obtain one.
Can anyone explain the hardware and software relationship between the PS2 BIOS and accurate emulation?
