According to an article from the Broadway of Spokane website, J.M. Barrie created the name Wendy when he wrote Peter Pan, after his friend William Ernest Henley’s young daughter Margaret called him “fwendy”—her lisp-accented version of ‘friendly’.
Also, shortly after he was invited to join a committee at the Great Ormand Street Hospital for Children (GOSH) in 1929, which he declined, he would gift all the rights to Peter Pan to the hospital. This meant all the royalties from each production of the play and sale of books and products would go directly to GOSH.
His only request? That the amount raised by this gift never be disclosed, which the hospital has honored.
How wonderful is that!
