Trump will speak to Nevadans today in Las Vegas to tout his economic policies. This is his second visit to the Silver State in the past six months, after speaking in April on his “no tax on tips” policy. In a recent interview, Trump claimed grocery and food prices were “all coming down” and said he should be “given an A+ on the economy.” Regardless of what Trump says, the economic numbers, and stories of everyday Americans, show that he has nothing to be proud of. Trump’s tariffs, war-fueled gas price spikes, and cuts to healthcare and SNAP are leaving Nevadans scraping by. While Trump thinks he deserves a gold star for his handling of the economy, Americans are giving him a bruising failing grade with his economic approval rating falling to just 32%.
Trump’s economic policies have made life worse for Nevadans in particular.
Las Vegas saw a 7.5% decline in tourism (3.1 million fewer visitors) last year. This is the steepest decline outside of the pandemic since they began tracking the data in 1970. [ABC News]
Trump’s “liberation day” tariff announcements in April 2025 cost the American tourism industry $1 billion in revenue every month since. [Cato Institute]
Canadian visitors to Las Vegas declined 17.4% in 2025 after Trump imposed major tariffs on the country and repeatedly suggested Canada become the “51st state.” [ABC News]
Even a spokesperson for Nevada Governor Joe Lombardo, who is endorsed by Trump and running for reelection, acknowledged Nevada’s unemployment rate “remains a little bit higher because of our tourism driven economy.” [ABC News]
As tourism declines, Las Vegas workers cannot reap the benefits of no tax on tips.
Joe Spica, a bellman on the Las Vegas Strip said, “I used to be able to take care of multiple dinners for me and my family with my tips from one day…Now I’m lucky to get a dinner for my tip from one day.” [ABC News]
